Chapter 8 - The Wedding That Almost Never Happened

Six months later, Roselli’s looked different.

Not unrecognizable.

Better.

New tables.

Fresh paint.

A renovated kitchen.

A new upstairs dining room.

But the heart of the place remained.

Tony still yelled when people overcooked pasta.

Maria still ruled the kitchen.

Jenna had started nursing school.

And Grace was now a partner.

Vincent had bought the neighboring property and transferred the restaurant into a new legal company with Grace and Tony as owners.

No hidden clauses.

No secret contracts.

No fake rent increases.

Everything was documented.

Everything was legitimate.

For Vincent, it was freedom.

For Grace, it was proof.

The wedding was scheduled for June.

Grace wanted a small ceremony.

Vincent's idea of small involved ninety people.

Grace reduced it to forty-two.

Vincent called that “negotiating under pressure.”

The night before the wedding, Grace stood in her apartment looking at her dress.

She was nervous.

Not about Vincent.

About the future.

Her phone rang.

Jenna.

“You ready?”

“No.”

“Excellent.”

Grace laughed.

“You?”

“Absolutely not.”

They talked for fifteen minutes.

Then Grace's phone received an unknown message.

You don't know what Vincent promised to give us.

Her smile disappeared.

Another message arrived.

Tomorrow, your wedding will expose everything.

Grace called Vincent.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?”

She sent him the message.

Silence.

Then:

“Lock your doors.”

“Vincent.”

“I'm coming.”

He arrived within twenty minutes.

Grace let him in.

“What does it mean?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

“I have a suspicion.”

“What?”

He showed her a document.

Adrian's legal agreement.

In exchange for cooperation, Adrian had received a reduced sentence recommendation and protected financial assets.

One clause concerned an offshore trust.

Grace looked at Vincent.

“What's this?”

“Money my father hid.”

“How much?”

“Twenty-eight million.”

“And?”

“Adrian refused to disclose its location.”

Grace understood.

“Someone wants it.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

There was a knock at the door.

Both froze.

Vincent looked through the peephole.

No one.

A small package sat on the floor.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

Grace stared.

“My mother.”

Vincent played it.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

“Grace, if you ever hear this, then someone has found the ledger.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Eleanor continued.

“I need you to know one thing. Vincent was never your enemy.”

Grace looked at Vincent.

The recording continued.

“His father wanted to use him. Daniel tried to stop him. Adrian was hidden because we feared what the organization would do to him. Vincent was kept ignorant because ignorance was the only protection we could give him.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

His breathing changed.

Then Eleanor said the words that changed everything.

“The money is not in a bank.”

Silence.

“It is in the restaurant.”

Grace stared at him.

“Roselli’s.”

Vincent nodded.

The cassette continued.

“The original server is beneath the old wine cellar.”

Grace looked stunned.

“They built the restaurant over it.”

“Yes.”

“The money is still there?”

“Possibly.”

The recording ended.

Grace sat down.

Vincent stared at the floor.

“The money was hidden here all along.”

“Then somebody knows.”

“Yes.”

“Which means my wedding is tomorrow.”

“Yes.”

“And someone might come for us.”

“Yes.”

Grace looked at him.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“Are you going to cancel?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent forty-three years letting fear tell me what to do.”

He took her hand.

“I'm done.”

The next morning, the wedding began.

Forty-two guests.

Simple flowers.

Soft music.

Tony cried before the ceremony even started.

Jenna was Grace's maid of honor.

Vincent stood at the front.

When Grace entered, he forgot every word he'd prepared.

She smiled.

He whispered,

“You look beautiful.”

She replied,

“You look terrified.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

The ceremony began.

Then the doors opened.

Adrian entered with two federal investigators.

Grace's heart stopped.

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“We found it.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

“The men coming for the money.”

Behind Adrian, police entered.

The guests began whispering.

Grace squeezed Vincent's hand.

“What do we do?”

Vincent smiled.

“We finish the wedding.”

The police detained three men outside the building.

The threat was neutralized.

The hidden fortune was recovered.

But Vincent refused to keep it.

He turned the funds over under a legal settlement process.

Some money went to victims.

Some was seized.

Some was eventually converted into legitimate charitable assets after years of legal review.

Vincent walked away with far less wealth than he once had.

He didn't care.

After the ceremony, Grace asked,

“Do you regret it?”

He looked at her.

“Giving up the money?”

“Yes.”

Vincent kissed her forehead.

“No.”

He smiled.

“I got something better.”

“What?”

He looked toward their friends.

Their family.

The restaurant.

Then back at her.

“A life I don't have to hide.”

Grace felt tears in her eyes.

She kissed him.

And when everyone around them applauded, Vincent laughed.

The mafia boss was gone.

The husband remained.
