Chapter 9 - The Security Footage and the Confrontation

Ten minutes later, the screech of tires echoed through the estate as Arthur’s limousine roared up the driveway, followed closely by two Cleveland Police patrol cruisers.

Arthur stormed into the mansion, his face thunderous with a rage so terrifying that even the armed guards stepped back instinctively.

When Arthur saw Annie and me sitting on the sofa with Mrs. Higgins, unharmed but shaking, he let out a shuddering breath of relief. Then, he turned his gaze toward Richard, who was sitting handcuffed in a chair in the center of the foyer, guarded by two police officers.

"Uncle Arthur, listen to me!" Richard pleaded desperately, his voice cracking. "These kids attacked me! I came here to drop off corporate files, and this boy tried to rob me! Look at the cash and your pocket watch on the floor! They broke the display case and attacked me with a brass pole!"

The lead police sergeant looked at Arthur. "Mr. Whitmore, we need to know what happened here. Mr. Richard Whitmore claims he was assaulted during a burglary."

Arthur didn't even look at Richard. He walked over to the wall near the grand staircase, pushed aside an oil painting of a landscape, and revealed a high-definition security control panel.

"My late wife, Evelyn, was kidnapped for ransom thirty years ago before I managed to rescue her," Arthur said in a voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. "Since that day, every single square inch of this estate—interior and exterior—has been monitored by thirty-two covert, audio-recording 4K security cameras connected to an off-site cloud server."

Richard’s eyes widened in sheer, absolute horror. The color completely drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.

Arthur tapped a few commands into the touchscreen panel and turned the secondary monitor toward the police officers.

The video played with crystal clarity.

It showed Richard picking the lock of the conservatory door. It showed him breaking into Arthur’s private safe, stuffing proprietary corporate files into his briefcase, and intentionally pocketing the ruby watch. Then, it clearly captured the audio of Richard threatening Caleb and Annie, throwing cash on the floor, and bragging about framing an eleven-year-old boy for theft before Annie bit his hand and Caleb defended his sister.

The police sergeant’s face hardened into stone. He closed his notebook, walked over to Richard, and grabbed him by the collar, hauling him roughly to his feet.

"Richard Whitmore," the sergeant announced, "you are under arrest for felony breaking and entering, grand larceny, tampering with evidence, attempted framing of a minor, and attempted assault."

"Uncle Arthur! Please!" Richard shrieked, struggling against the handcuffs as the officers dragged him toward the front doors. "You can't do this to your own family! Think of my father! Think of the Whitmore name!"

Arthur stepped directly into Richard’s path, stopping him inches away.

"Your father was a thief who stole from his best friend," Arthur whispered, every syllable dripping with cold finality. "And you are a coward who tried to frame children to save your stolen fortune. You are no longer a Whitmore. You are nothing."

Arthur signaled to the officers. "Get him out of my sight. And tell the district attorney that I will personally fund the special prosecution team to ensure he receives the maximum sentence in state prison."

The police dragged Richard out into the rain, his pathetic screams swallowed by the howling wind as the patrol car doors slammed shut.

When the house fell quiet again, Arthur turned to Annie and me. He slowly sank to his knees—a billionaire tycoon kneeling on the broken glass and scattered papers—and pulled both of us into a tight, trembling embrace.

"You were so brave," Arthur choked out, tears running freely down his cheeks. "Both of you. I am so sorry I wasn't here to protect you."

"We're okay, Mr. Arthur," Annie whispered, wrapping her small arms around his neck. "Caleb protected me."

Arthur pulled back, looking into my eyes with deep pride and admiration. "Your father would be so proud of you, Caleb. You have his courage. You have his heart."
