Chapter 12 - The Eviction of the Golden Sister

Two weeks later, the final eviction notice was served on Richard and Helen’s four-thousand-square-foot suburban estate in Raleigh.
The bank auction sign was hammered into the front lawn by the sheriff’s department:
AUCTION BY ORDER OF THE SUPERIOR COURT — PROCEEDS BENEFITING THE LILY & NOAH MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT.
Richard Vance stood on the front lawn, watching his pearl-white Lincoln Navigator being hoisted onto the bed of a commercial repossession tow truck.
His construction company had folded. His contractor’s license had been permanently revoked by the state licensing board for fraud. His high-society friends at the country club had universally blacklisted his name from every board, gala, and charity event in the state.
Helen sat on a plastic lawn chair beside the driveway, clutching a worn photo album, shivering in a cheap coat she had bought at a discount store.

Melissa had moved into a cramped, one-bedroom basement apartment forty miles outside the city, working as a junior receptionist at a dental clinic to pay off her mounting credit card debts.
The golden family had been reduced to absolute dust.
