Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF A MOTHER

Z
Arthur sent the photograph at 12:42 p.m.
Margaret sat in a chair inside an unknown room.
Unhurt.
Terrified.
Holding that morning’s newspaper.
Beside her, Arthur Hale stood with one hand resting on his cane.
The message beneath it contained an address.
MIDNIGHT.
BRING BOTH KEYS.
NO POLICE.
OR SHE DIES FIRST.
Norah read it once.
Then again.
Luca took the phone from her.
“No.”
Norah stared.
“He has my mother.”
“I know.”
“I’m going.”
“We’re getting her back.”
“With the keys.”
“No.”
Her fear became anger.
“I am not debating this with you.”
“Good. Because there’s nothing to debate.”
She shoved his chest.
“You do not get to become controlling because we kissed.”
Luca looked almost offended.
“This has nothing to do with the kiss.”
“It better not.”
“It has to do with Arthur Hale having thirty years of experience killing people who inconvenience him.”
“And it has to do with my mother.”
“I know.”
Norah’s voice cracked.
“He took her because of me.”
“No. He took her because of him.”
That stopped her.
Luca stepped closer.
“You don’t carry guilt for choices monsters make.”
Norah looked away.
Ryan had spent years convincing her that every disaster somehow came back to her.
Luca did the opposite.
He returned responsibility to the person who earned it.
“I can’t lose her.”
“You won’t.”
“You can’t promise that.”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“But I can promise you won’t face it alone.”
That nearly broke her.
Instead, she nodded.
Alvarez devised the operation off the books.
The address Arthur provided belonged to an abandoned shipping warehouse near the Calumet River.
Thermal cameras showed six people inside.
Possibly seven.
Margaret was visible in an office on the second floor.
Arthur’s mistake was requesting the two physical keys.
That meant he couldn’t access BLACK HARBOR without them.
Which meant he needed Norah and Luca alive at least temporarily.
At 11:57 p.m., they entered.
Norah carried her father’s token.
Luca carried Antonio’s.
Arthur waited at the far end of the warehouse.
Margaret sat beside him.
Victoria stood nearby.
Norah stopped.
“You.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
Arthur smiled.
“My granddaughter finally remembered which family created her life.”
Victoria looked sick.
Norah understood.
Not loyalty.
Coercion.
Arthur had found another weak point.
“What does he have on you?” Norah asked.
Arthur’s smile faded.
Victoria whispered, “My brother.”
Norah hadn’t known she had one.
Arthur tapped his cane.
“Enough conversation.”
Luca held up the key.
“Release Margaret.”
“When I have access.”
“Not happening.”
Arthur sighed.
“You Morettis always confuse aggression with negotiation.”
Luca smiled coldly.
“And Hales confuse age with immortality.”
Norah almost applauded.
Arthur led them toward a steel office containing an old computer terminal connected to modern hardware.
BLACK HARBOR.
A login screen required two physical authentication keys.
Arthur inserted them.
The system unlocked.
Hundreds of accounts appeared.
Offshore trusts.
Political payments.
Blackmail archives.
Decades of crimes.
Arthur’s expression became almost reverent.
“There you are.”
Norah watched him.
“You could have destroyed this years ago.”
“I never wanted it destroyed.”
Luca understood.
“You lost access.”
Arthur nodded.
“Antonio changed the authentication system before he died.”
“He locked you out of your own empire.”
“Temporarily.”
“Seventeen years is a generous definition of temporary.”
Arthur ignored him.
He navigated toward a transfer screen.
Norah frowned.
“What are you doing?”
“Moving what belongs to me.”
“You kidnapped people for money?”
Arthur laughed.
“My dear, power has always been money with better tailoring.”
He entered a transfer request.
Then stopped.
A third authentication prompt appeared.
PERSONAL CODE REQUIRED.
Arthur’s face changed.
“What is this?”
Norah looked at Luca.
He didn’t know either.
Arthur struck the keyboard.
“Antonio.”
He turned toward Luca.
“What was his code?”
“I don’t know.”
Arthur pulled a gun and aimed at Margaret.
Norah’s heart stopped.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Luca remained calm.
“Kill her and you never get it.”
“Then I’ll start with someone else.”
He pointed the weapon toward Norah.
Luca moved instantly.
“No.”
Arthur smiled.
There it was.
The weak point.
Norah.
She saw the satisfaction on Arthur’s face.
And suddenly she knew the code.
“Going second doesn’t mean losing.”
Luca looked at her.
“What?”
“Your father’s chess lesson.”
She turned toward the keyboard.
“He always made you play black.”
Luca understood.
“Black king.”
Norah typed BLACKKING.
Rejected.
Arthur raised the gun.
“Again.”
Norah thought.
Antonio was a numbers man.
Chessboard.
Black king.
Starting square.
E8.
She typed E8.
The screen changed.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Arthur lowered the gun.
“Finally.”
But instead of an account dashboard, a video began.
Antonio Moretti appeared on the screen.
Young.
Alive.
Arthur froze.
“If you are watching this,” Antonio said, “then Arthur Hale has successfully forced someone to open BLACK HARBOR.”
Luca’s face went white.
Antonio continued.
“And that means he has lost.”
Every bank account on the screen turned red.
TRANSFER LOCKED.
EVIDENCE DISTRIBUTION ACTIVE.
Arthur screamed.
“What did you do?”
Files began uploading automatically.
FBI.
Department of Justice.
Multiple newspapers.
International financial regulators.
Antonio smiled from seventeen years in the past.
“I knew you would never resist coming back for the money, Arthur.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Arthur aimed his gun at the computer.
Victoria slammed into him.
The shot went wide.
Luca crossed the room.
Arthur fell.
Margaret screamed.
Norah reached her mother.
Police flooded the warehouse.
Alvarez cuffed Arthur Hale on the concrete floor.
For the first time in three decades, the old man looked small.
Defeated.
As officers pulled him away, Arthur stared at Norah.
“You think this ends with me?”
Norah held her mother.
“No.”
May you like
She looked at Luca.
“It ends with the truth.”
