Chapter 8 - THE ASHES OF AN EMPIRE

Marcus froze, inches from the fire. The heat of the burning ledger warmed my face, but the blood in my veins felt like ice.

He looked down the barrel of the gun, then up at my face. For the first time, the dead, cruel certainty in his eyes wavered. He saw it. He saw the ghost of the twin sister he had destroyed, and the iron will of the mother who had outsmarted him.

"It's gone, Marcus," Gabriel said, rising slowly from the floor, wiping blood from his chin. "The accounts are burned. The blackmail is ashes. You have nothing."

The heavy pounding on the study door suddenly stopped. Outside, the wail of police sirens pierced the night air.

Bella smiled, a cold, triumphant smile. "The alarm on Gabriel's watch doesn't just ring in the house, Marcus. It's connected directly to the federal task force that has been trying to build a case against you for ten years. You breached my home with armed men. They have you."

Marcus’s face twisted in rage. "You've ruined yourselves too! Gabriel is going to prison right alongside me!"

"No, he isn't," Bella said quietly. She walked over to the desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a manila envelope. "Because Gabriel has been a federal informant since the day my daughter was killed."

The reversal left me breathless.

Gabriel looked at me, a heavy exhaustion settling over his shoulders. "I didn't take over the syndicate to rule it, Olivia. I took it over to dismantle it from the inside. To avenge my wife. To protect Leo."

Red and blue lights flashed through the study windows, casting chaotic shadows across the room. The sound of boots kicking down the front doors echoed through the estate, followed by men shouting, "FBI! Drop your weapons!"

Marcus looked at the ashes in the fireplace, then at the federal agents swarming the lawn. His shoulders slumped. The monster of Brooklyn was suddenly just a tired, defeated old man.

Gabriel stepped forward and gently pushed the barrel of my gun down. "You don't need this anymore," he whispered.

He took the gun from my trembling hands and set it on the desk. Then, he turned to the iron door and slid the bolt back.

Federal agents poured into the room. They slammed Marcus against the wall, cuffing him instantly.

"Gabriel Moretti," a stern-looking agent said, stepping forward. "Are you injured?"

"I'm fine, Agent Vance," Gabriel said tiredly. "The ledger is gone. But Marcus breached the property with illegal firearms, and you have the recorded wiretaps I submitted last week. It's enough to put him away forever."

"It's enough," Vance agreed. He looked at me, then at Bella. "Is your family safe?"

Gabriel looked at Leo, who had crept out from behind the desk and was clutching my leg. Then he looked at me, his icy eyes finally melting into something warm and profoundly grateful.

"Yes," Gabriel said softly. "My family is safe."

I sank to my knees, wrapping my arms around Leo. He buried his face in my shoulder, his small hands gripping my sweater tightly. I looked up at Bella. She was touching the pearls around her neck, tears streaming down her face—not tears of pain, but of profound relief.

The nightmare was over.
