Chapter 12 - The Night the Mansion Went Dark

“Dad?”
Thomas raised one finger.
“Quiet.”
Norah pulled Lily behind her.
“Why do you have that key?”
“Because Mateo gave it to me.”
“Where is Mateo?”
“Trying to restore the backup generator.”
Another crash sounded downstairs.
Thomas moved toward them.
“We need to go.”
Norah did not move.
“Go where?”
“Secure room.”
“You first.”
Thomas stared at her.
“You don’t trust me.”
“I thought you were dead for seven years.”
“Fair.”
“Turn around.”
“What?”
“You walk first.”
Thomas nodded.
“All right.”
They moved through the dark hallway.
Lily clung to Norah.
“Is this a game?”
“Yes,” Norah whispered.
“What kind?”
“The quiet game.”
“I’m good at that.”
Norah almost laughed despite the terror.
They reached the hidden stairwell.
Thomas unlocked the steel entrance.
Inside, emergency lights glowed.
Norah pushed Lily through first.
Then she stopped.
Thomas remained outside.
“Aren’t you coming?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Someone has to lock it.”
“You can lock it from inside.”
Thomas looked down the corridor.
“I also need to help Mateo.”
Norah understood something.
“You came back because of me.”
Thomas looked at her.
“I came back because I should have years ago.”
“Dad—”
“I was afraid, Norah.”
She swallowed.
“I told myself staying away protected you.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
His eyes filled.
“It only meant you were alone.”
Norah wanted years to disappear.
They did not.
But she reached through the doorway and hugged him.
Thomas froze.
Then held her tightly.
For three seconds, she was twenty again.
Then Thomas stepped back.
“Lock it.”
“Come back.”
“I’ll try.”
“No.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“You always hated that answer.”
“I still do.”
The door closed.
Norah locked it.
Inside the safe room, Lily began crying.
“I want Daddy.”
“He’s coming.”
Norah prayed it was true.
Twenty minutes away, Dominic’s SUV tore through traffic.
He had reached Mateo by radio.
The estate’s electrical system had been deliberately sabotaged.
Two men had entered through a maintenance tunnel thought to be sealed.
The tunnel plans were old.
Vittorio knew them.
“Where’s Norah?”
“Secure room,” Mateo replied.
“And Lily?”
“With her.”
Dominic exhaled.
“My father?”
A pause.
“He helped get them there.”
Dominic looked out the window.
“Keep him alive.”
At the mansion, the intruders never reached the secure wing.
Mateo’s remaining team contained them near the service corridor.
The confrontation lasted minutes.
To Norah, locked beneath the house, it felt like hours.
Lily sat in her lap.
The baby moved constantly.
Perhaps reacting to Norah’s racing heart.
“Is the baby scared?” Lily whispered.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she has us.”
Lily touched Norah’s belly.
“We’re brave.”
Norah smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
A buzzer sounded.
Someone entered the access code.
Norah stood.
The door opened.
Dominic appeared.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Lily screamed, “Daddy!”
Dominic caught her.
Norah sagged against the wall.
He carried Lily to her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“The baby?”
“Fine.”
Dominic closed his eyes briefly.
Then he wrapped one arm around Norah while still holding Lily.
It was awkward.
Tight.
Desperate.
Norah felt his hand shake.
She had never seen Dominic Russo shake.
“You’re okay,” he whispered.
Norah realized he was saying it to himself as much as to her.
“Yes.”
“Thomas?”
Her stomach dropped.
“Where is he?”
Dominic hesitated.
“Alive.”
Norah exhaled.
“He was injured stopping one of the men.”
“How bad?”
“Not life-threatening.”
“I want to see him.”
“You will.”
Dominic looked at Lily.
“But first we leave.”
“Where?”
“A safe property.”
Norah stiffened.
“No more fortresses.”
“Norah.”
“No.”
“This house was breached.”
“And another one can be breached.”
“What do you want me to do?”
She looked at him.
“End it.”
“I’m trying.”
“No. End all of it.”
Dominic understood.
She was not talking about Vittorio.
She meant the entire life.
The network.
The fear.
The armed men.
The endless retaliation.
“I can’t erase twenty years overnight.”
“I know.”
“Then what are you asking?”
“Choose the direction.”
Dominic stared at her.
Lily leaned sleepily against his shoulder.
Norah touched her stomach.
His children.
His future.
For the first time in Dominic’s adult life, power felt less valuable than peace.
“I already have,” he said.
Norah searched his expression.
“What direction?”
“Away.”
Hours later, the family relocated temporarily to a secure hotel suite owned by one of Dominic’s legitimate corporations.
Thomas was taken to a private hospital.
The federal recording from Vittorio’s meeting spread rapidly through the investigation.
Arrests began before sunrise.
But Vittorio himself disappeared.
Dominic learned at six twelve in the morning.
“He left the rail yard before agents moved,” Mateo said.
“Where?”
“Unknown.”
Dominic looked toward the bedroom where Norah and Lily slept.
Vittorio was cornered.
Cornered men became dangerous.
“Find him.”
“We’re trying.”
“No.”
Dominic turned toward Mateo.
“Find him before he realizes the organization has stopped answering his calls.”
But Vittorio already knew.
And at seven forty-five that morning, Norah’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered before Dominic could stop her.
Vittorio’s voice came through the speaker.
“Good morning, Norah.”
Dominic reached for the phone.
Norah stepped away.
“What do you want?”
“Only to tell you something Dominic never will.”
Norah looked at him.
“What?”
Vittorio laughed softly.
“The attack five months ago—the night you and Dominic hid in that safe room?”
Norah’s heart slowed.
“What about it?”
“I ordered it.”
Dominic went still.
Vittorio continued.
“And if I had known what that night would create, I would have finished the job personally.”
The call ended.
Norah stared at Dominic.
The night that brought their daughter into existence had not been random.
It had been part of Vittorio’s first attempt to remove Dominic.

And now the man responsible was still free.
