Chapter 10 - FILES THAT MAKE KINGS FALL

Vincent looked exhausted.

His tie was gone, his white shirt collar unbuttoned, and his dark hair slightly disheveled.

But his gray eyes burned with cold, murderous fury.

He took one step into the penthouse.

Then he saw us.

His gaze swept from Marcus standing by the desk to me sitting calmly in his executive chair.

A slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips.

“Well, well,” Vincent murmured, his voice smooth as silk.

“My runaway wife and my favorite traitor.”

“I wondered how long you’d last in the woods, Claire.”

“Turns out, you didn't even have the stomach to leave the city.”

Marcus raised his pistol, aiming squarely at Vincent’s chest.

“Don't move, Vincent,” Marcus warned, his voice shaking slightly.

Vincent didn't even look at the gun barrel pointed at his heart.

He kept his cold gray eyes locked entirely on me.

“Put the gun down, Marcus,” Vincent said softly.

“You’re a dead man either way.”

“You really think you outsmarted me?” Vincent laughed softly, walking closer.

“You think downloading a few spreadsheets to a flash drive brings down a man who owns half of Illinois?”

“I didn't download them to a flash drive, Vincent,” I said, standing up slowly from the leather chair.

“I uploaded them to the FBI.”

Vincent’s smile vanished instantly.

His face went completely pale, mirroring the exact expression he had worn three days ago in our Lake Forest bedroom.

“What did you say?” Vincent whispered.

“The federal task force received the master ledger ten minutes ago,” I answered, walking around the desk to face him.

“Federal judges are signing search warrants for every casino, hotel, and shipping yard you own right now.”

“By sunrise, your accounts will be seized, your assets frozen, and your partners arrested.”

Vincent lunged forward with terrifying speed.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Vincent struck Marcus across the face with the heavy butt of a concealed pistol.

Marcus crashed hard onto the Persian rug, unconscious.

Vincent grabbed me by the throat, slamming me against the glass window.

“You ruined me!” Vincent roared, spittle flying from his lips, his eyes wild with madness.

“You ungrateful bitch!”
