Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

Lorenzo realized it a second too late.

“Kill them!” Lorenzo screamed to his guards.

But Dante’s men were faster. Thirty weapons fired in perfect synchronization, disarming Lorenzo’s guards in a calculated wave of non-lethal shots to their legs and shoulders.

Dante surged forward, grabbing Lorenzo’s wrist and twisting it until the gun dropped into the snow. With one brutal strike, Dante knocked the syndicate boss unconscious.

It was over.

Sofia collapsed, pulling little Lily into her arms. The six-year-old buried her face in her mother’s neck, weeping. “You came back for me, Mommy.”

“I’ll always come back for you,” Sofia sobbed, kissing the girl’s hair.

I ran to my mother. She caught me in a fierce hug, smelling of lavender detergent and cold air. My father joined us, wrapping his arms around both of us. A family, whole for the first time in a decade.

“I’m so proud of you, Nora,” my mother whispered, touching my cheek.

Dante stood a few feet away, watching us. He unbuttoned the black overcoat and pulled a small pocket knife from his trousers.

He sliced open the heavy velvet lining near the collar.

He reached inside and pulled out a thin, flexible, waterproof notebook. The real ledger.

He looked at it for a moment, the key to ruling the criminal underworld of the entire East Coast.

Then, he walked over to a burning barrel the dockworkers used for warmth.

And he dropped it into the fire.

My father gasped. “Dante, what are you doing? That’s your leverage.”

“My family’s legacy ends tonight, Arturo,” Dante said, watching the pages curl and turn to ash. “I’m done with this life. Lorenzo goes to the FBI. The ledger burns. New York is clean.”

He turned back to us. The harshness in his face was gone, replaced by a quiet peace.

An hour later, the police arrived to sweep up Lorenzo and his men. Dante had arranged for his high-powered lawyers to grant my father full immunity in exchange for his testimony.

Before she left, Sofia walked up to Dante. She looked exhausted, but her dignity had returned.

She slipped the massive diamond engagement ring off her finger and held it out.

“We were never a love story, Dante,” Sofia said softly. “We were a business arrangement. And the business is closed.”

Dante didn't take the ring. “Keep it, Sofia. Sell it. Buy a house in Switzerland. Keep Lily safe.”

Sofia nodded, tears in her eyes. “Thank you.”

She turned to me. “I’m sorry, Nora. For what I said at the penthouse. You were never just a coat girl.”

“I know,” I said, smiling gently.

As the sun began to rise over the East River, painting the snow in shades of gold and pink, Dante walked up to me.

“Your mother’s medical bills are paid in full,” Dante said. “And Arturo is a free man.”

May you like

“I don't know how to thank you,” I said, looking up into his dark eyes.

“You already did.” He brushed a stray piece of ash from my shoulder. “You wouldn't give me my coat.”
