Chapter 11 - The Blackmail Threat That Aimed to Strip Nathan of Everything

Two weeks later, the legal walls were closing in on Richard and Victoria Cole.
Callahan had delivered a devastating blow in Allegheny County Court, freezing all of Victoria’s trust accounts pending a criminal grand jury investigation into twenty million dollars of diverted foundation assets.
Stripped of their social standing, facing imminent prison sentences, and drowning in debt, the conspirators grew desperate.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while June was at school, Nathan received a private courier package at his corporate office.
Inside was a thumb drive and a typed note:
Nathan,
You think you’ve won. But we have Clara’s original medical admission records from Ohio, along with an unsealed paternity deposition taken when she applied for emergency Medicaid. If these documents are released to the national press, they contain forged medical affidavits claiming June is not your biological daughter, but the product of an illicit relationship with an Ohio convict.
The media will devour her. St. Jude’s will expel her. Her legal custody will be tied up in federal litigation for the next five years, and she will be placed in state protective custody while the courts investigate.
Deposit fifty million dollars into the attached Swiss account by midnight tomorrow, or your precious daughter will spend the rest of her childhood in the system you rescued her from.
— Richard.
Nathan’s office went completely still.
The rain lashed against the fifty-story glass windows of the skyscraper. Laura, who was standing beside his desk, saw Nathan’s expression change. The warmth and tenderness he had developed over the past few months vanished, replaced by an aura of cold, calculating, apocalyptic fury.
"Mr. Cole?" Laura asked, her voice trembling. "What is it?"
Nathan stood up slowly. "Call Callahan. Call our head of global cybersecurity, Marcus Vance. Tell them to bring the offshore surveillance dossier to my conference room immediately."
Within thirty minutes, the war room was assembled.
Callahan looked at the typed threat and shook his head in disgust. "It’s completely fraudulent, Nathan. The Ohio medical affidavits are forged. But Richard is right about one thing—if he files a fraudulent paternity challenge with the federal court, the state foster board could issue an interim protective holding order on June pending forensic review. It could take months to dismiss."
"I am not letting June spend one single second in a state facility," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Not one second."
Marcus, a former military intelligence officer who ran Cole Meridian’s security grid, tapped a key on his laptop, projecting Richard Cole’s live location onto the wall monitor.
"We’ve been tracking Richard’s burner communications since the grand jury subpoena was issued," Marcus reported. "He’s currently operating out of an abandoned freight warehouse on the Monongahela River—a facility Cole Meridian decommissioned three years ago. He isn't alone. He hired three disreputable private security contractors."
"He’s cornered," Callahan noted. "A cornered animal does stupid, dangerous things."
"He made a fatal mistake," Nathan said, strapping on his leather watch and pulling on his dark overcoat. "He threatened my daughter."
"Nathan, you cannot go there alone," Callahan warned. "Let the police handle it. We have enough to issue an immediate arrest warrant for extortion."
"An arrest warrant will take six hours to process," Nathan said coldly. "In six hours, Richard could leak those forged documents to the tabloid wire services. By the time the police arrive, the damage to June’s psychological safety would be done."

Nathan looked at Marcus. "Bring two executive protection teams. Block all four access roads to the Monongahela warehouse. Nobody leaves that facility."
Nathan stepped toward the door, his eyes burning with lethal determination. "I am ending this today."
