Chapter 10 - The Mansion of Equals

The heavy oak double doors of the Carter mansion swung open to welcome an evening breeze scented with the rich fragrance of rosemary and roasted garlic floating up from the kitchen. But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely transformed.
There were no snobby cousins whispering behind cupped hands. There was no cold, condescending sister mocking the hostess from the formal dining room.
Instead, the long mahogany dining table was surrounded by a very different group of guests.
Sitting across from Nathaniel and Rebecca were several community leaders from the St. Jude Center—including the elderly man Rebecca had held hands with in the rain, now dressed in a clean suit jacket, laughing heartily as he shared stories with the couple. The air was filled with genuine warmth, rich food, and the sound of unscripted, joyful laughter that finally filled every corner of the grand estate.
Rebecca sat at the head of the table, right beside Nathaniel, her posture relaxed, her eyes bright, and her smile completely at home. She wore a simple, elegant silver pendant necklace—not a multi-million-dollar diamond statement piece bought to impress investors, but a delicate silver charm shaped like a small house, a gift Nathaniel had slipped onto her wrist that morning with a note reading: Always home.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the house grew quiet once more, Nathaniel and Rebecca stood together on the second-floor balcony, looking out over the manicured lawn bathed in the soft glow of landscape lighting.
The rain was entirely gone, replaced by a blanket of brilliant, star-filled southern sky.
Nathaniel wrapped his arms around Rebecca from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder as she leaned back against his chest, her hands resting over his.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Carter," Nathaniel murmured softly against her ear.
Rebecca smiled, looking out toward the distant lights of the city skyline where the new St. Jude center was rising from the earth.
May you like
"I was just thinking," Rebecca whispered, her voice laced with peace, "that it’s amazing how much light you can let into a house once you finally decide to open the front doors."
Nathaniel tightened his embrace, pressing a tender kiss to her temple, knowing that the dark nights of wandering through the rain were gone forever. They had built an empire, lost their way, and found something infinitely more valuable in the rubble: each other. And as they stood together beneath the southern stars, the Carter mansion was finally, truly, a home.
