Chapter 9 - THE HEIRLOOM'S RETURN

The cellar became a warzone of flashing muzzle bursts and deafening echoes.
Bullets shattered wine bottles above our heads, raining glass and dark red liquid over us like blood.
I curled my body completely over Leo, pressing his face into my chest and covering his ears with my trembling hands. The little boy was sobbing silently, his small frame shaking violently against mine.
“Stay down!” Luca roared over the gunfire.
Through the strobe-light flashes of gunfire, I saw Luca moving with terrifying speed. He wasn't just a billionaire in a suit; he was a predator in his element.
He took down the first mercenary with two precise shots to the chest.
The second one fell when Luca vaulted a crate and tackled him into the stone wall, breaking his jaw with the butt of his gun.
The remaining two mercenaries panicked, firing wildly into the dark.
“Turn the lights on!” Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking in pure terror. “Turn them on!”
She fired blindly into the shadows.
A bullet slammed into the oak barrel inches from my head. Splinters rained into my hair.
I couldn't stay here. If she kept shooting, one of these bullets was going to hit the boy.
I looked down at the silver bracelet on my wrist. The key to the vault. The only thing she wanted.
I unclasped it.
“Hannah, no!” Leo whimpered.
“Stay here, baby,” I whispered, kissing his forehead. “Don't make a sound.”
I crawled out from behind the barrel, my hands slick with wine and dust.
“Vanessa!” I screamed into the dark.
The gunfire instantly stopped.
“I have it!” I yelled, holding the silver bracelet up, even though she couldn't see it. “I took it off! If you want it, you have to let them go!”
“Throw it to me!” Vanessa shrieked.
“No. You walk out that door, and I’ll throw it to you in the driveway. Just you and me.”
Silence hung heavy in the damp air.
Then, the cold, metallic click of a flashlight clicked on.
The beam hit me squarely in the face, blinding me.
Vanessa stepped out from behind a stone pillar, her gun aimed right at my heart. The two remaining mercenaries were nowhere to be seen. Luca had handled them.
It was just her and me.
“Throw it,” Vanessa demanded, her hand shaking.
I looked past the light.
In the shadows behind Vanessa, a massive figure rose from the dark.
Luca.
He didn't have his gun. He moved silently, like a ghost.
I looked back at Vanessa and forced myself to smile.
“You’re pathetic,” I said clearly.
Vanessa’s face twisted in rage. She tightened her finger on the trigger.
Before she could fire, Luca struck.
He grabbed Vanessa’s gun hand, twisting it violently upward. The gun went off, blowing a hole in the stone ceiling.
With his other hand, Luca swept her legs out from under her. Vanessa hit the stone floor with a sickening thud. The gun skittered away into the dark.
Luca didn't hesitate. He pinned her to the floor, grabbing the antique emerald necklace from her hand and tossing it aside.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a pair of heavy steel zip-ties, and secured her wrists behind her back.
Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly. “You’re nothing without that money, Luca! Dominic is going to kill you!”
Suddenly, the heavy iron cellar doors at the top of the ramp burst open.
Red and blue police lights flooded the basement.
Dozens of armed tactical officers poured in, followed closely by Daniel, the head of security, rubbing a massive bruise on his jaw.
“Boss!” Daniel yelled, sweeping the room with his flashlight. “We got Dominic upstairs. The police intercepted him at the gate.”
Luca stood up, breathing heavily. He straightened his ruined suit jacket.
“Take her,” Luca said coldly, pointing down at Vanessa.
Two officers dragged a screaming Vanessa to her feet and hauled her up the stairs.
Silence finally descended on the cellar.
Luca turned to me.
He dropped to his knees right there in the puddle of shattered glass and spilled wine. He pulled me into his arms, crushing me against his chest.
“I thought I lost you,” he choked out, burying his face in my neck.
I wrapped my arms around him, the adrenaline finally crashing, leaving me sobbing into his shoulder.
“I’m okay,” I cried. “I’m okay.”
I felt a small tug on my apron.
Leo was standing there, clutching his teddy bear, looking up at Luca with wide, terrified eyes.
Luca let go of me and looked at the boy.
He didn't see Dominic’s bastard son. He saw his sister’s child.
Luca reached out gently and picked the little boy up. Leo hesitated for a second, then buried his small face into Luca’s broad shoulder, wrapping his arms tightly around his uncle’s neck.
Luca closed his eyes, a tear slipping down his bruised cheek.
“You’re safe now, Leo,” Luca whispered. “You’re home.”
Three months later.
The afternoon sun streamed through the massive windows of the Moretti estate library.
I stood by the fireplace, adjusting the cuffs of my white blouse. My left ankle was completely healed. I wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform anymore.
I was wearing a simple, elegant navy dress.
The door opened, and Luca walked in. He looked breathtaking in a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair catching the light.
He smiled when he saw me, the warmth in his eyes completely erasing the cold mafia boss the world thought he was.
“How is he?” I asked, smiling back.
“Fast asleep,” Luca chuckled, walking over to me. “Leo exhausted himself playing with the dogs in the garden.”
With Vanessa in federal prison and Dominic behind bars for life, the estate had finally become a home. Mia was in a rehabilitation facility, getting the psychiatric help she needed, and she had signed temporary custody of Leo over to Luca.
The boy was thriving. He was safe. He was loved.
Luca stopped in front of me. He reached into his pocket.
“The lawyers finally cleared your father’s name this morning,” Luca said softly. “The state officially expunged his record. His pension and the vault blueprints have been released to you. You’re a very wealthy woman, Hannah.”
Tears pricked my eyes. My father’s dignity, finally restored.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Luca shook his head. “I didn't do it for gratitude.”
He reached out and took my hand.
From his pocket, he pulled out a small, velvet box. But it wasn't the box that held the fake emerald.
He opened it.
Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless diamond ring.
My breath caught in my throat.
“I spent my entire life protecting this family’s legacy,” Luca said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. “But the night in the cellar, I realized none of it mattered if I didn't have you to share it with.”
He looked deeply into my eyes.
“I don't want a fake wedding, Hannah. I don't want a business arrangement. I want you.”
He stepped closer, his thumb gently brushing my cheek.
“Marry me,” he whispered.
I looked at the ring. Then I looked at the man who had risked his life, his empire, and his life to save a maid who couldn't pay her rent.
I didn't hesitate.
“Yes,” I smiled, tears spilling over my cheeks.
Luca slid the ring onto my finger, then pulled me in, capturing my lips in a kiss that promised a lifetime of safety, love, and truth.

The heirloom was back in the vault.
But the real treasure was finally standing right in front of me.
