Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Black Orchid

Two hours past midnight, Dominic sat behind the mahogany desk in his private study on the third floor. On the monitor in front of him was a decrypted military intelligence file, unlocked using an encrypted backdoor frequency that Leo had managed to bypass with the help of high-end underworld contacts.
Dominic stared at the glowing screen.
OPERATIVE DESIGNATION: CIPHER-9 (PROJECT ORCHID)
STATUS: CLASSIFIED / PRESUMED DEAD
SPECIALTIES: COVERT INFILTRATION, ADVANCED HAND-TO-HAND CQB, COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE, HIGH-VALUE TARGET EXTRACTION.
RECORD: 47 CONFIRMED BLACK OPS MISSIONS ACROSS THREE CONTINENTS.
REAL NAME: ELEANOR ‘NORA’ CROSS.
Below the file was a photograph taken six years ago. Nora, dressed in tactical gear in the deserts of the Middle East, eyes cold, ruthless, and devoid of fear.
A soft knock sounded at the door. Dominic didn’t close the laptop.
“Come in,” he said.
Nora walked inside carrying two cups of black coffee. She set one in front of him, glanced at the laptop screen, and let out a dry, quiet breath.
“You did your homework,” she murmured, leaning her hip against the edge of his desk.
“Cipher-9,” Dominic read aloud from the monitor. “A ghost within the special operations division. Retired after a mission in Eastern Europe went sideways and your entire unit was betrayed by corrupt brass. You vanished into Italy, altered your dental records, took up painting, and lived off the grid.”
Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, watching her intently.
“When I met you in Florence,” Dominic said, “those loan sharks… you could have killed all four of them with your bare hands, couldn't you?”
Nora took a slow sip of her coffee. “I was tired, Dominic. I had spent twelve years killing men for politicians who didn't care about anything except power. I wanted to stop. When you walked into that gallery with your three-piece suit and your private army, and offered to take care of me… I took the exit ramp. I wanted a quiet life.”
“And you fell in love with a mafia boss?” Dominic raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine curiosity breaking through his hardened facade.
Nora’s gaze softened for a split second, a rare moment of genuine vulnerability peeking through the armor.
“You weren’t a politician,” Nora answered softly. “You didn’t hide your violence behind pretty speeches. You were honest about who you were. You protected what was yours. In a strange, twisted way… you were the safest place in the world for a monster like me.”
Dominic was silent. For years, he thought he was the sole protector, the dangerous apex predator shielding a fragile flower from the horrors of the underworld.
The realization that his wife was just as lethal—if not more dangerous—than him was terrifying.
And intoxicating.
“Arthur Vance has three hundred men mobilizing on the West Side,” Dominic said, shutting the laptop with a sharp snap. “Thomas Russo has cut our supply lines at the harbor. By sunrise, they plan to surround this estate and wipe out the Gallo family name.”

Nora set her coffee cup down. Her eyes turned to steel.
“Then let’s make sure they never see the sunrise.”
