Chapter 12 - THE RESIGNATION

The kitchen went deathly quiet.
Only the hum of the refrigerator broke the silence.
Olivia felt a sudden, familiar coldness touch her chest.
"Are you letting me go?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Gabriel set his fork down on the plate.
He didn't answer immediately.
He reached into his pocket and placed a crisp white legal envelope on the marble island between them.
Olivia looked at the envelope.
"What is this?"
"Your resignation," Gabriel said calmly.
"And a deed of ownership."
Olivia’s eyebrows drew together in confusion.
She picked up the envelope and slid out the documents inside.
The first page was a certified deed for a three-story brownstone on Lincoln Park West.
Fully furnished.
Paid in full.
The second document was an irrevocable trust fund established under Lily Carter’s name.
Five million dollars.
Administered by an independent trustee, unrestricted for education, housing, and healthcare.
Olivia’s hands began to tremble.
"Gabriel... no," she stammered, shaking her head in disbelief.
"I can't accept this."
"This is not a gift from me, Olivia," Gabriel said gently, leaning forward on the counter.
"This is Julian’s debt."
"Four years ago, your husband Daniel gave his life to protect my family's legacy."
Gabriel’s voice grew soft, raw with emotion.
"Daniel should have lived to buy you that brownstone."
"He should have been the one to pay for Lily’s college."
"I am simply returning what was stolen from you."
Olivia looked down at the embossed legal stamps.
Tears welled in her eyes, blurring the crisp black print.
"You risked your life for my daughter last night," she whispered.
"You took a bullet for us."
"That repaid any debt a thousand times over."
"That wasn't about debt, Olivia," Gabriel said.
His dark eyes held hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"What was it about?" she asked softly.
Gabriel looked at Lily, who was busy feeding a small piece of pancake to Nero under the table.
Then he looked back at Olivia.
"You asked me why I hired you six months ago."
"I told you it was to protect Daniel’s family."
Gabriel paused, his fingers lightly brushing hers across the marble counter.
"That was true at first."
"But over the last six months, I watched you."
"I watched the way you brought warmth into these cold, empty halls."
"I watched the way you never flinched from me, even when everyone else in this city was terrified of my shadow."
Gabriel’s thumb gently traced the knuckle of her index finger.
"You don't belong in a uniform, Olivia."
"You never did."
Olivia’s throat tightened so hard she couldn't speak.
She slid the deed back across the marble toward him.
Gabriel frowned slightly.
"You're refusing?"
May you like
"I'm refusing to leave," Olivia said clearly.
