Chapter 13 - Secrets in the Vault

By dawn, the underground garage had been cleaned, the bodies vanished into the furnace pits of the industrial district, and the Moretti estate was locked down like a military compound.

We were back in the private sanctuary of Luca’s study. The morning sun broke through the tall French windows, casting long golden rectangles across the Persian rugs.

Marco walked in, holding a scorched steel lockbox recovered from the maintenance van used in the ambush.

"Silvio’s men had this bolted beneath the driver’s seat," Marco said, placing it on Luca’s mahogany desk with a heavy clunk. "It’s got biometric locks, but our tech team bypassed the circuits."

Luca popped the latches with the tip of his combat knife. The lid sprang open.

Inside were stacks of bearer bonds, five encrypted USB drives, and a thick dossier labeled with a faded crimson stamp: *PROJECT ICARUS - 2012*.

Luca’s brow furrowed. "Icarus? That was my father’s old operation before he was assassinated. Silvio told the family the files were burned in the warehouse fire ten years ago."

I stepped closer to the desk, peering into the box. My eyes snagged on an old photograph tucked between the pages of the dossier.

My breath hitched in my throat.

I reached out, my fingers trembling as I picked up the photograph. It showed three men standing outside an old brick building on the South Side of Chicago. In the center was Luca’s father, recognizable by his sharp jawline and piercing eyes. To his left was Silvio Bellandi.

And to his right... standing tall with a gentle, humble smile... was my father.

"Clara?" Luca noticed my sudden rigidity. He stood up, placing a hand gently against the small of my back. "What is it?"

"My... my father," I choked out, pointing a shaking finger at the photograph. "That’s him. Thomas Vance. He worked as an accountant for an import-export company until he died in a hit-and-run when I was twelve."

Luca’s expression darkened instantly. He grabbed the dossier, his fingers flying through the yellowed documents. Marco stepped forward, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"Your father wasn't an ordinary accountant, Clara," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling octave as he read the classified ledger entries. "He was the chief forensic auditor hired by my father to uncover who was stealing from the Moretti syndicate."

He looked up from the page, his eyes burning with an incandescent rage that made the air in the room feel thin.

"Your father discovered that Silvio Bellandi was setting up my father to be executed by rival cartels. And before Thomas could deliver the evidence to my father... he was murdered."

The world tilted beneath my feet.

The hit-and-run that had destroyed my childhood, left my mother in financial ruin, and eventually forced me into low-wage domestic work—ultimately leading me to the Moretti estate as a house cleaner—was never an accident.

It was an execution.

"Silvio killed my father," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. The grief of twelve years morphed in a single heartbeat into cold, merciless venom.

"Yes," Luca said, stepping around the desk and taking both of my hands into his. His gaze was steady, dark, and utterly devoid of mercy. "And he used your father's death to steal the throne. He tried to force Gianna onto me to cover the trail forever."

Luca lifted my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes.

May you like

"Clara, you didn't stumble into my house by accident. Destiny brought you here to take back what was stolen from both of us. And I swear on my father’s grave: Silvio Bellandi will not die quickly for what he did to your family."
