Chapter 11 - THE VAULT

We burst out of the warehouse doors just as the two remaining thugs shook off their shock and started firing.

Bullets pinged off the metal shipping containers behind us as we sprinted to the car. Luca shoved me into the passenger seat, diving in after me, and slammed the gas pedal. The sports car fishtailed in the gravel before rocketing onto the main road.

I was gasping for air, clutching the leather-bound ledger to my chest.

Luca glanced at me, a wild, exhilarated grin spreading across his face.

"A digital copy?" he laughed, the sound deep and genuine. "Emma, you are a terrible liar, but God, you are brave."

I let out a shaky laugh, leaning back in the seat. "Did it work?"

"It kept the book from burning," he said, tapping the steering wheel. "And it gave us the upper hand. But now we have a different problem."

"What?"

"If we take this to the Commission tomorrow, they will demand to see the accounts. They will see the money Vanessa stole, but they will also see fifty years of my family's illegal operations. My father's racketeering, the gambling rings, everything. To prove Vanessa's guilt, I have to expose my own syndicate to the other families."

I looked at him. "Can you survive that?"

Luca’s expression sobered. "It would weaken the Moretti family for a decade. The vultures would circle." He looked at the road ahead. "Unless we use what’s in the vault."

"What vault?"

"The one beneath the estate," Luca said. "My father didn't just leave me a mafia empire. He left a contingency plan. A way out."

We drove straight to the Moretti mansion.

The gates were heavily guarded, but they swung open instantly for Luca. Daniel met us at the front door.

"Is everyone safe?" I asked immediately.

"Your mother and son are in the west wing, ma'am. Eating ice cream," Daniel smiled. "Bruno is doing guard duty."

I breathed a sigh of relief.

Luca led me past the grand staircase, down a hidden hallway behind the library, and into the sub-basement. We stood before a massive steel vault door, the kind used in federal banks.

"My father built this," Luca said, placing his hand on the biometric scanner. "He always said the mafia was a dying breed. He wanted me to be a businessman, not a gangster."

The heavy door hissed open with a mechanical clunk.

We stepped inside.

I expected to see stacks of dirty cash, guns, or drugs.

Instead, the vault was lined with filing cabinets and a massive server rack blinking with green lights.

"What is this?" I asked, amazed.

"Legitimacy," Luca said softly. "For ten years, I've been silently washing the Moretti money. Buying real estate, tech companies, shipping lines. I've been building a legal empire, completely clean, waiting for the right moment to transition the family out of the underworld."

He turned to me, his dark eyes intense.

"Vanessa wanted to marry me to control the underworld. But if I expose this ledger to the Commission tomorrow, I don't just expose her. I dissolve my own mafia ties."

"You'd walk away from being the Boss?" I asked, stunned.

"For the right reason," he said, taking a step closer to me. "I don't want my future children growing up with bombs in their closets, Emma. I want them growing up safe."

He reached out and gently took my hand.

"I have enough clean assets to walk away. The Moretti family becomes the Moretti Corporation. No more blood. No more violence."

Tears pricked my eyes. "Are you sure?"

Before he could answer, a loud alarm blared overhead, flashing red lights throughout the vault.

Daniel's voice cracked over the intercom.

"Boss! We've got a massive problem at the front gate."

Luca hit the comms button. "Report."

"It's the Romanos," Daniel said, panic evident in his voice. "The biggest rival family in the city. Fifty armed men just pulled up. They’re demanding you come out."

May you like

"Why?" Luca demanded.

"They say Vanessa Bellini made a deal with them before the wedding. She promised them the Moretti territory if she went to prison. They're here to collect."
