Chapter 12 - THE RING IN THE VELVET BOX

The room went completely still.

The only sound was the soft ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner of the study.

Dominic didn’t drop to one knee. That wasn’t who he was. He stood tall, looking directly into my eyes with an intensity that made my heart race.

He opened the velvet box.

Inside sat a breathtaking vintage diamond ring. It wasn’t flashy or ostentatious. It was elegant. An emerald-cut diamond surrounded by delicate sapphire baguettes, set in aged platinum.

“This was my grandmother’s,” Dominic said quietly. “She gave it to my mother. My mother made me promise, right before she died, that I would only put it on the finger of a woman who was brave enough to stand beside me, not behind me.”

I looked at the ring, then up at him. I couldn’t breathe.

“Emma,” Dominic said, taking my free hand. His thumb brushed over my knuckles. “Ten years ago, my family took everything from you. They broke your world apart. But you survived. You walked into my house bleeding, terrified, and you refused to break.”

He stepped closer, closing the distance between us.

“I can’t rewrite the past. But I swear on my life, I will spend every day of our future making sure you and Lily know what it means to be protected. To be family. To be loved.”

A single tear slipped down my cheek.

“I’m not invisible anymore, Dominic,” I whispered.

“No,” he agreed, his eyes shining with profound emotion. “You are the only thing I see.”

“Then ask me.”

Dominic smiled. A slow, breathtaking smile.

“Marry me, Emma.”

“Yes.”

He slid the cool platinum band onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

Dominic didn’t hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, lifting me off my feet, and kissed me. It wasn’t a gentle kiss. It was deep, passionate, and filled with the promise of a lifetime. A seal on a new dynasty.

When he finally set me down, we were both breathless.

“Dommy! Mommy!”

We turned toward the doorway.

Lily was standing there in her pink winter coat, her ballet bag slung over her shoulder, looking impatient.

“Daniel says we’re gonna be late for pliés!” she announced.

Dominic laughed. It was a rich, booming sound that filled the study.

He walked over, scooped Lily up into his arms, and turned to look back at me.

The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest. The secrets were buried.

“Come on, Mrs. Valenti,” Dominic said, his eyes dancing with joy. “We have a ballet class to get to.”

I looked down at the vintage diamond glittering on my hand. I looked at the framed photograph of my mother on the desk. I knew she was smiling.

I picked up my coat and walked out the door to join my family.
