Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH REVEALED

The safe house wasn't a bunker. It was a beautiful, warm, multi-level home in the quiet suburbs of Evanston.

When Luca carried me through the front door, the first thing I saw was a pair of tiny sneakers by the stairs.

"Mommy!"

Leo came running down the hallway, wearing his Spiderman pajamas.

"Leo!"

Luca set me down on the sofa, and my son crashed into my arms. I buried my face in his messy brown hair, inhaling the sweet smell of his shampoo. I squeezed him so tight he giggled.

"I missed you, Mommy. The big men gave me ice cream."

I looked up at Luca through my tears.

He was watching us, a soft, genuine smile on his face. The dark, heavy burden he had carried as a mafia boss seemed to have vanished completely.

"Thank you," I mouthed.

Over the next two weeks, the truth broke across Chicago like a thunderstorm.

Vanessa and Vincent Falcone were indicted on federal murder and racketeering charges. Dr. Harris lost his license and accepted a plea deal to testify against them.

The Moretti estate was quietly sold.

Luca kept his promise to the FBI. He stepped down as the head of the syndicate, dismantling his family's criminal operations and turning their legitimate businesses into a charitable trust.

Antonio recovered beautifully. Without the heavy sedatives Dr. Harris had been feeding him, his mind sharpened. He moved into the first floor of the Evanston house, spending his days reading in the sunroom and teaching Leo how to play chess.

Dignity.

That was what Luca gave us.

He hired the best orthopedic surgeon in the city to repair my knee. He paid for Leo to attend a private elementary school. He didn't treat me like a maid anymore. He treated me like a partner.

One evening, I was standing in the kitchen, chopping vegetables for dinner. My knee was healing, wrapped in a light brace.

Luca walked in. He was wearing jeans and a simple grey sweater. He looked handsome. Normal.

He leaned against the counter, watching me.

"You don't have to cook, Grace. We can order in."

"I like cooking," I smiled. "And Leo refuses to eat delivery pizza unless it has pineapples on it. It's a crime."

Luca chuckled.

He stepped closer, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His touch sent a warm shiver down my spine.

"I got a call from the lawyers today," Luca said softly. "The estate sale is finalized."

"That's wonderful," I said.

"There's something else."

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick, sealed envelope.

"The lawyers found a hidden safety deposit box in my mother's name. They opened it yesterday. They found a document inside."

I frowned, wiping my hands on a towel. "What kind of document?"

Luca's eyes searched mine. There was a strange mix of sorrow and wonder in his gaze.

"Grace... what was your maiden name?"

"Miller," I said, confused. "Grace Miller."

Luca slowly shook his head.

"No, Grace. That's the name you were given in foster care."

May you like

He handed me the envelope.

"My mother didn't just leave a rosary behind," Luca said, his voice barely a whisper. "She left a birth certificate."
