Chapter 8 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATEThe priest's name was Father Thomas Bell.

He was seventy years old, with a weathered face and hands that trembled when he opened his briefcase. Vincent arrived before he was allowed to speak to me, and Daniel placed two guards outside the room.

Father Bell looked at Vincent.

“I don't want trouble.”

“Then tell us the truth.”

The priest opened a folder and removed a marriage certificate.

The names were Daniel Bennett and Clara Bennett.

The date was correct.

The signatures looked like ours.

But a second page listed Daniel's birth name as Daniel Mercer.

I stared at the document.

“Who is Daniel Mercer?”

Father Bell looked at me with deep sadness.

“Your husband was born Daniel Mercer. His father was a man named Michael Mercer, who worked as a security adviser for Vincent's family.”

Vincent's expression changed.

“Michael Mercer died twenty years ago.”

“Yes. He was killed during an attack on one of the family's properties. Daniel was a boy then. Richard Sterling arranged for him to be placed with a distant relative and given a new identity.”

“Why?” Vincent demanded.

“Because Daniel had witnessed something he shouldn't have seen.”

I felt dizzy.

“What did he witness?”

Father Bell looked toward Vincent.

“Your mother's final argument with Richard Sterling.”

The room went silent.

Vincent's face became unreadable.

“What did Daniel see?”

“He was hiding in a corridor when Richard threatened your mother. He heard them arguing about the family trust and the original will. A week later, your mother died.”

Vincent gripped the edge of the desk.

“And Daniel never told me?”

“He was a child. Richard threatened his family. When Daniel grew older, he tried to find proof. He took the name Bennett to escape attention.”

I looked down at the certificate.

“Why did he marry me under that name?”

Father Bell hesitated.

“Because he wanted a life that wasn't defined by his father's death. He loved you. But he was also afraid that Richard would discover who he was and use you to get to him.”

The explanation hurt because it made sense.

It did not erase the lies.

It did not return my husband.

But it helped me understand why he had lived as two different people.

Vincent sat down opposite me.

“Clara, I won't ask you to forgive him. You have every right to be angry.”

“I am angry,” I whispered. “I'm angry that he made decisions for me. I'm angry that he died without telling me what was happening. And I'm angry that I still love him enough to wish he were here.”

Vincent nodded.

“That's not a contradiction.”

Father Bell reached into the folder and removed another document.

“There's something else. Daniel asked me to keep this safe if he died.”

It was a letter addressed to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Clara,

If you are reading this, I couldn't keep my promise to come home.

I know I have hidden too much. I wanted to tell you everything, but every time I came close, I remembered what happened to my father. I convinced myself that silence was protection.

I was wrong.

You deserved the truth.

The baby you're carrying is not connected to Richard's bloodline. But Richard believes she is. He believes the original will named a child who could challenge his control over the Moretti trust.

I stopped reading.

Vincent leaned forward.

“Keep going.”

The next line made my fingers go cold.

I found evidence that Richard altered the records of your pregnancy. He wanted to know whether your child could be used to reopen the trust. I don't know why he believes that, but I know he is afraid of your daughter being born.

I looked up.

“Why would my baby matter to his inheritance?”

Vincent's expression darkened.

“Because my mother may have changed her will before she died. If the will named a future heir, Richard could have been trying to find that child.”

“But I'm not related to your family.”

Vincent stared at the letter.

“Maybe Daniel knew something we don't.”

Father Bell cleared his throat.

“There's one final page.”

He placed it on the table.

It contained a handwritten note from Vincent's mother.

If Elena is unable to protect the child, the truth must pass to the next woman who carries the name Grace.

Vincent read the sentence twice.

Then he looked at me.

“You said you and Daniel chose Grace for your daughter.”

I nodded slowly.

“He told me it was a name from his mother's side.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Daniel's mother was named Grace Mercer.”

Father Bell nodded.

“And Vincent's mother was Grace Moretti.”

No one spoke.

Two women.

One name.

A will hidden for years.

And a child whose birth might change the ownership of an empire.

Before anyone could ask another question, Daniel rushed into the room.

“Sir, the hospital called. Rebecca's daughter has been found.”

Rebecca stood abruptly.

“Grace?”

Daniel nodded.

“She is safe. But there's a problem.”

Vincent's expression hardened.

“What problem?”

Daniel swallowed.

“She's been asking for a woman named Elena.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

May you like

Then Daniel added:

“And the woman who brought her to the hospital claims she is Elena Moretti.”
