Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT WAS ALONE

Z

Rachel Bennett reached her car at 7:42 p.m.

The man following her reached her at 7:43.

He never touched her.

The black SUV pulled between them first.

Two men stepped out.

The stranger turned away immediately.

A third vehicle blocked the opposite exit.

Rachel stared.

“What the hell is happening?”

One of Damon’s security men raised both hands.

“Rachel Bennett?”

“Who wants to know?”

“Your sister.”

That was the wrong answer.

Rachel grabbed the pepper spray from her purse.

“Kate hasn’t spoken to me in two years.”

“She needs you.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“What happened?”

Forty minutes later, Kate heard her sister’s voice through Damon’s secure phone.

“Kate?”

Kate closed her eyes.

“Hey.”

“What did you do?”

Despite everything, Kate laughed.

“That’s your first question?”

“You disappear for two years and then the mafia sends three SUVs to my apartment.”

“You stopped calling me.”

“You stopped answering.”

“You missed Mom’s surgery.”

“You told me she didn’t want me there.”

“She didn’t.”

Silence.

Old anger filled the space between them.

Then Rachel’s voice changed.

“Are you hurt?”

Kate looked at her cast.

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

“Broken arm.”

“Who?”

Kate did not answer.

Rachel understood.

“Oh my God.”

“I’m okay.”

“Stop saying that.”

Kate went quiet.

Rachel’s voice broke.

“You always say you’re okay when you’re not.”

For some reason, those words hurt more than her arm.

Kate wiped her face.

“I need you to leave Tucson for a few days.”

“Because somebody followed me?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“A senator’s people.”

“What kind of job did you take?”

Kate looked across the room at Damon.

“It’s complicated.”

Damon mouthed, That’s fair.

Rachel arrived in Philadelphia the next morning.

The reunion was ugly.

There were tears.

Accusations.

Two years of resentment.

Then Evelyn Bennett walked into the room wearing her blue chemotherapy cap.

Rachel collapsed into her arms.

Kate turned away.

Damon stood beside her.

“You can leave,” Kate whispered.

“This is your family.”

“Exactly.”

He understood.

He walked outside.

Ten minutes later, Kate found him standing alone beneath an old oak tree.

“You really do leave when people ask.”

“Usually.”

“That sounded almost offended.”

“I have a reputation to maintain.”

Kate smiled.

Then her face became serious.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Rachel.”

“She was threatened because of something that happened in my home.”

“She was threatened because Preston Caldwell is a monster.”

“Both can be true.”

Kate leaned against the railing.

“My mother told me about yours.”

Damon looked over.

“She told you what?”

“That Isabella protected my family.”

He nodded.

“She was better than my father.”

“That seems to be a complicated sentence.”

“It is.”

“Did he know what happened to Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“And still protected the family reputation?”

“Yes.”

Kate considered that.

“So when you saw my arm…”

“I saw history.”

“And you decided you were going to rewrite it.”

“I decided Preston Caldwell would not walk out of my house believing what he did had no consequence.”

“That’s different.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

Kate stepped closer.

“Consequences aren’t the same as revenge.”

Damon looked at her.

“Sometimes they are.”

“That’s the problem.”

Before he could answer, Matteo appeared at the door.

“Damon.”

Something in his tone changed everything.

Inside, a video had arrived.

Preston Caldwell sat in front of a blank wall.

He was no longer at the Blackwell estate.

Kate stared at Damon.

“You released him?”

“No.”

Matteo shook his head.

“Police came with a warrant at noon.”

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“They took him into custody.”

“And released him?”

“Forty-three minutes later.”

Of course they had.

The video began.

Preston looked directly into the camera.

“My family has been accused of terrible things by criminals trying to extort us.”

Kate’s stomach turned.

He continued.

“I categorically deny harming Katherine Bennett.”

Kate flinched hearing her full name.

Damon reached for the laptop.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Kate forced herself to keep watching.

Preston smiled sadly for the camera.

“She was an employee at a private event. She appeared intoxicated and emotionally unstable.”

Kate’s face went white.

Damon looked murderous.

Preston continued.

“When I attempted to help her after she fell, she became confused and aggressive.”

Rachel swore.

Evelyn began crying.

Kate sat perfectly still.

Then the final blow came.

“My family intends to cooperate fully with law enforcement. We also ask the public not to rush to judgment based on accusations spread by Damon Blackwell, a man with a documented history of organized criminal associations.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Kate stared at the blank screen.

For twenty-four hours, she had been afraid.

Now she was angry.

Not wild anger.

Not Damon’s cold silence.

Something cleaner.

She stood.

“Call the journalists.”

Damon looked at her.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“I know.”

“Your name will be public.”

“I know.”

“People will investigate you.”

“I know.”

“They’ll investigate your mother.”

Her face tightened.

“I know.”

Damon stepped closer.

“You don’t owe anyone your story.”

Kate looked at him.

“No.”

Then she looked at the cast.

“But Preston just told mine for me.”

She walked toward the table.

“So now I’m taking it back.”

Three hours later, Kate Bennett sat beneath studio lights in a private room at Eleanor Blackwell’s house.

No maid uniform.

No apron.

No attempt to disappear.

The journalist across from her turned on a recorder.

“Whenever you’re ready.”

Kate breathed once.

“My name is Katherine Bennett.”

Behind the camera, Damon watched.

“I worked at the Blackwell estate.”

Another breath.

May you like

“And Preston Caldwell broke my arm.”

For the first time in her life, Kate Bennett did not lower her voice.
