Chapter 14 - The Fall of the Bellini Syndicate

By sunrise, the south pier was cordoned off with miles of yellow federal crime tape.
Over forty federal agents, state prosecutors, and city detectives swarmed the scene.
Salvatore Bellini, handcuffed to a gurney with heavy steel restraints, was wheeled into an armored federal ambulance under the guard of six armed marshals.
The evidence recovered from the waterproof vault—along with the micro-cassette handed over by Vanessa and the financial records preserved by Michael Moretti—triggered the largest racketeering indictment in the history of Illinois.
By noon:
Deputy Commissioner Thomas Vance was formally charged with sixty-two counts of public corruption, treasonous conspiracy, and accessory to attempted murder.
Over thirty-four commercial properties and twelve offshore shell companies owned by the Bellini family were seized by federal asset forfeiture units.
Vanessa Bellini entered a full cooperation agreement with the United States Department of Justice.
In exchange for her complete testimony detailing thirty years of her father’s extortion network, she was granted immunity from the 1998 arson charges, with a sentence of community service and mandatory restitution to the victims' families.
As Vanessa was escorted into an unmarked government sedan outside the federal courthouse, she stopped and looked across the plaza.
Luca stood beside Frank Delaney and me on the granite steps.
Vanessa looked at Frank, her eyes red, her posture stripped of all the arrogance and cruelty she had displayed at table twelve the night before.
She gave a small, sorrowful nod of genuine remorse.
Frank touched his scarred hand to his chest and gave her a quiet nod in return.
