Chapter 6 - An Ambush in the Winter Rain

The rain transformed into a heavy downpour as we navigated the back alleys of Little Italy. Marco drove with the headlights off, using the dim city glow to guide the SUV through narrow brick lanes where luxury cars rarely dared to enter.

“They’ve tapped the estate’s phone lines,” Marco reported from the front seat, checking an encrypted tablet. “Vanessa’s father just put out a city-wide contract through the underground exchange. Two million dollars for anyone who delivers Michael Moretti’s lockbox unopened.”

“He’s terrified,” Luca said, leaning back against the leather seat, though his hand never left the grip of his pistol. “For thirty years, Vincent Bellini built his empire on the lie that my father betrayed the five families. If this box is opened before the Commission, his own lieutenants will execute him for treason.”

We pulled up behind an old brick building with a faded neon sign: GRECO TAILORING & FINE SUITS – EST. 1968.

The front windows were dark, but a faint, warm light leaked through the iron grating of the basement workshop.

“Wait here,” Luca commanded Marco. He turned to me. “Stay close, Claire.”

We walked down the slick concrete steps leading to the basement door. Luca tapped out a specific rhythm on the reinforced wood: three slow knocks, two quick, then one.

A peephole slid open. Antonio’s wrinkled face appeared behind the iron bars. His eyes widened, and he quickly unbolted three heavy deadbolts.

“Luca! Mother of God, come in, come in!” Antonio ushered us inside, locking the door behind us with trembling hands.

The tailor shop smelled like wool, steam, lavender water, and old paper. Rolls of Italian silk and racks of hand-cut suits lined the perimeter. In the center sat an old iron sewing machine and a butcher-block table covered in chalk, shears, and spools of thread.

Sitting on a stool near the radiator was Antonio’s twenty-four-year-old granddaughter, Mia. She held a baseball bat across her knees, her eyes wide with shock.

“You’re really Luca Moretti,” Mia whispered.

Luca gave a polite nod. “I am. And you must be the clever granddaughter who taught Antonio how to record phone conversations.”

Mia offered a nervous, proud smile. “Grandpa gets taken advantage of. I made sure he had defense.”

Antonio turned to Luca, his gaze falling immediately on the metal lockbox under Luca’s arm. “You found it.”

“We found it, Antonio,” Luca said softly. “And we heard the tape. We know what Michael left behind.”

Antonio crossed himself, his eyes brimming with tears. “Michael sat at that very table, Luca. Thirty years ago. He was coughing blood. He told me, ‘Antonio, Vincent Bellini is a demon wearing a tailor-made suit. He gave me a slow poison. But I have secured the future for Luca.’ He made me swear on the Virgin Mary that I wouldn't breathe a word until you came asking about your mother's coat.”

Luca placed the lockbox gently on the butcher-block table. “You kept your promise for three decades, old friend. You risked your life tonight.”

“Your mother made me cannoli when my wife was dying in the hospital,” Antonio said fiercely. “In this neighborhood, we don't forget kindness. Never.”

Suddenly, the glass in the front display window upstairs shattered with an explosive crash.

CRUNCH!

Heavy bootsteps stomped across the floorboards directly above our heads.

“They found us,” Marco’s voice crackled through Luca’s earpiece. “Boss! Two tactical vans just boxed in the alleyway! It’s the Bellini private militia!”

Luca’s demeanor turned instantly cold. “Mia, Antonio—get into the hidden cutting room behind the silk rack. Lock the steel hatch.”

“Luca, no!” Antonio pleaded.

“Go!” Luca barked.

I stepped beside Luca, picking up a heavy tailor's iron from the workbench. Luca caught my eye and, despite the impending gun battle, a look of genuine admiration flashed across his face.

“Claire, if we survive tonight,” Luca murmured, racking his weapon, “you’re never making coffee or organizing my schedule again.”

“What will I be doing, Mr. Moretti?”

“Running the entire empire beside me.”
