Chapter 12 - A Fortress Built on Bones

The months that followed changed the very foundation of the Moretti empire.

Under Luca and Lucia's guidance, the syndicate's violent operations were steadily dismantled and converted into legitimate commercial shipping and real estate ventures.

The limestone mansion was no longer a place of whispers and fear.

Laughter echoed through the halls.

Aunt Teresa moved back into the east wing, spending her afternoons baking traditional Italian pastries with Lucia in the renovated kitchen.

Isabella enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago, finally free from the constant terror of an impending mob war.

And Carlo Bellini spent his remaining days in a federal maximum-security prison, stripped of his fortune, his name, and his power.

One afternoon, I walked up to the third floor.

The door to my mother’s old locked suite was wide open.

Inside, on a mannequin by the sunny window, hung the navy-blue wool overcoat.

The missing button had been replaced with an antique horn button from Italy.

The torn seams had been stitched shut with invisible, golden silk thread.

I ran my fingers over the rough, heavy fabric.

Luca walked into the room, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed.

“Thinking about the engagement party?” he asked with a gentle smirk.

“Thinking about how close I was to throwing this into the fireplace,” I replied softly.

He walked over, standing beside me, looking out over the sprawling green lawn stretching toward the blue horizon of Lake Michigan.

“If you had burned it, I would have lived the rest of my life in the dark,” Luca said quietly.

He placed a protective arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side.

“You gave me back my mother. You gave me back my sister.”

I leaned my head against his chest, hearing the steady, calm beat of his heart.

“We’re home, Luca.”

May you like

“Yes,” he whispered, kissing the top of my head.

“We’re finally home.”
