Chapter 10 - Cold Truths in the Rain

The following Sunday, the autumn air was crisp and scented with fallen leaves.
Luca and I drove out to the serene, rolling hills of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside. We walked hand-in-hand along the quiet gravel path until we reached a magnificent marble mausoleum surrounded by ancient weeping willows.
Carved in gold lettering above the arched portal were the names:
SALVATORE & MARIA MORETTI
Together in Eternal Peace
Luca laid a massive bouquet of fresh white lilies and blue hydrangeas before his mother’s bronze plaque.
He stood in silence for a long time, his fingers gently tracing the carved letters of her name.
“She loved hydrangeas,” Luca said softly, the breeze rustling his dark hair. “Every spring, she would plant them along our front porch. She told me blue was the color of truth, because the sky never lies about the coming rain.”
I stepped closer, wrapping my arm through his. “She would be so peaceful knowing you are free, Luca. You didn't just avenge her; you honored everything she stood for.”
Luca turned toward me. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew the velvet pouch Dorothy Gable had given him.
He pulled out the five-carat blue sapphire ring.
The gem caught the dappled sunlight filtering through the willow branches, glowing with an ethereal, deep azure fire.
Luca took my right hand in his, his fingers warm and steady.
“Grace,” he said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with an unwavering certainty. “When you walked into my home with that cardboard cake box, you had every reason to look away. You had debts, you had burdens, and you had a cruel woman threatening your livelihood. Yet you chose to stand in the fire for an old teacher and a stranger’s memory.”
He looked into my eyes, laying his soul completely bare.
“I have spent my life surrounded by gold that was hollow and people who were fake,” Luca whispered. “You are the only real thing I have ever known. You are my courage. You are my heart.”
He knelt before me on the soft green grass, holding up the sapphire ring.
“Grace Miller, will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down my cheeks. I didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat.
“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, laughing through my tears. “A thousand times, yes.”

He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit with absolute perfection, as though Maria Moretti herself had crafted it for this exact moment.
Luca stood, wrapped his strong arms around my waist, and lifted me off my feet, pressing his lips to mine in a kiss that erased every shadow, every pain, and every tear that had ever existed in our lives.
