Chapter 14 - Stripping the Mask from the True Assassin

Two weeks after the meeting at the Palmer House, the final trial hearings for the Bellini family were concluded in closed federal court.

Victor and Dante received life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Vanessa was sentenced to fifteen years for conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and evidence tampering.

The day after the sentencing, Luca took me to Mount Carmel Cemetery.

The autumn leaves were brilliant shades of gold and red, drifting gently across the quiet marble tombstones.

We walked hand in hand up the small hill to Michael Moretti’s private mausoleum.

Dr. Adler was already waiting there, holding a bouquet of white lilies.

Luca stood in front of his father’s resting place for a long time in silence.

The wind rustled through the oak trees above us.

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the old silver watch.

The back plate was still slightly open.

Inside, where the secret message had once been hidden, Luca had placed a small, new photograph.

It was a picture taken three days earlier in the Gold Coast garden.

It showed my mother, smiling and healthy, sitting beside Leo and Dr. Adler, with Luca and me standing behind them.

Luca laid the watch gently on the marble altar beneath his father’s name.

“You kept your promise, Dad,” Luca said softly. “The second chance worked.”

Dr. Adler placed the lilies beside the watch, wiping a tear from his cheek.

“Michael would be proud of you, Luca,” the doctor said gently. “Not because of the empire you rule, but because of the man you’ve become.”

Luca turned to Dr. Adler and embraced the old physician warmly.

“Thank you, Samuel. For everything.”

“Take care of this young lady,” Dr. Adler smiled, nodding toward me. “She’s the real hero of this story.”

“I intend to,” Luca replied, his eyes meeting mine with a depth that made my heart race.
