Chapter 10 - The Wooden Box In The Pantry

I stared at the wooden box. My name, Sophie, was carved into the dark oak in elegant, looping script.

I hadn't seen this box yesterday. I hadn't seen it in the ten months I'd worked here.

I picked it up. It was surprisingly heavy. My thumb traced the brass latch on the front. I flicked it open.

Inside rested a beautiful, antique gold pocket watch. It was ticking softly.

But beneath the watch was a folded piece of heavy parchment paper. I unfolded it, my hands slightly damp.

It was a birth certificate.

Name: Sophia Elena Carter. Mother: Maria Carter. Father:

I stopped breathing. The line for the father wasn't blank like it was on my official copy at home.

Father: Lorenzo Moretti.

My knees went weak. I caught myself on the edge of the marble island.

Lorenzo Moretti. Adrian’s father.

“No,” I whispered to the empty kitchen. “That’s impossible.”

My mother had never talked about my father. She said he was a traveling salesman who died in a car crash before I was born. But my mother used to work as a seamstress in the North Shore—cleaning and mending clothes for wealthy families.

Families like the Morettis.

Suddenly, a voice spoke behind me.

“You found it.”

I spun around. Adrian was standing in the doorway, wearing a fresh linen shirt, looking exhausted but at peace.

He walked slowly toward me, his eyes dropping to the birth certificate in my trembling hand.

“When did you know?” I asked, my voice cracking.

“Last night,” Adrian said softly. “When I found the ledger in the greenhouse, I saw Evie’s notes. She wasn't just hiding Leo from my father’s enemies. She was tracking his past mistakes. His… other families.”

“I’m your sister?” I gasped, stepping back.

Adrian shook his head immediately. “No.”

He reached out and gently took the paper from my hand.

“You’re not his daughter, Sophie. My father forged this document years ago.”

“Why would he forge a birth certificate tying me to him?” I asked, completely lost.

“Because of what you represent,” Adrian said, turning the watch over. “Look at the inside of the lid.”

I leaned in. Engraved inside the gold lid was a map coordinate and a short phrase: The key is blood.

“My father hid a massive portion of his offshore wealth before he disappeared,” Adrian explained. “He tied the trust to a blood relative to avoid federal seizure. But he knew his enemies would hunt down his real children—me and Leo. So, he created a decoy.”

“Me.”

“Yes. He paid your mother a lump sum twenty-five years ago to put his name on your private birth record. If the cartel or the feds ever dug deep enough to find his ‘hidden heir,’ they would find a working-class girl in Chicago. You were his human shield.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks. My entire life—my mother’s struggles, my lack of a father—was just a mobster’s insurance policy.

Adrian saw the pain in my eyes. He stepped closer and did something he had never done before. He gently wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb.

“He used you,” Adrian said fiercely. “Just like Vivian tried to use Leo. But I promise you, Sophie. You are not a pawn anymore. You are under my protection.”

Before I could respond, the kitchen phone rang sharply.

Adrian answered it. His face hardened instantly.

“When?” Adrian barked into the receiver. “Fine. Secure the perimeter.”

He hung up and looked at me, his eyes dark.

“The cartel in Italy just found out my father is dead,” Adrian said. “And they know about the coordinates in that watch.”
