Chapter 15 - A VOW IN THE ASHES

The party wound down as twilight fell over Marblehead.

The guests departed in long lines of town cars, leaving the estate quiet under the canopy of evening stars.

Delphine stood on the stone balcony overlooking the cliffs.

The Atlantic rolled against the rocks below, foaming white in the moonlight.

The breeze was cool, carrying the scent of night-blooming jasmine from the garden.

Soft footsteps sounded on the flagstones behind her.

Warm, strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest.

Sloan buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her familiar scent of vanilla, rain, and clean skin.

“Leo is asleep,” Sloan murmured against her ear. “Cora is watching him like a hawk in the nursery.”

Del laughed softly, resting her hands over his on her waist.

“She’s going to spoil him rotten.”

“She’s allowed,” Sloan smiled. “He saved her life as much as you did.”

They stood in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the silver moonlight dance across the waves.

The nightmare of the Copper Lantern, the poisoned wine, the broken operating room at Saint Jude’s—all of it seemed like a distant bad dream.

Sloan turned her around in his arms.

He looked down into her amber-flecked eyes.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn piece of silver.

Del gasped.

It was her nursing stethoscope tag: Delphine Vaughn, RN – Trauma One.

The piece of metal she had left on their kitchen counter the night she ran away.

“You kept it?” she whispered.

“I carried it in my pocket every single day for three years,” Sloan said. “To remind me of the woman who saw the monster I was, and chose to love me anyway.”

He gently pinned the silver tag to the bodice of her emerald gown.

Then he dropped onto one knee on the cool stone balcony.

Del smiled through a veil of happy tears.

“Sloan, we’ve been married for four years.”

“We were married by a judge in a hurry because my enemies were closing in,” Sloan said, taking her left hand in his. “I gave you fear. I gave you blood. I gave you reasons to run.”

He looked up at her, his gray eyes shining with absolute devotion.

“Now, I want to give you peace. I want to give you fifty years of quiet mornings, burnt toast, and our son’s laughter.”

He brought her knuckles to his lips, kissing each one with reverent tenderness.

“Will you stay with me, Delphine? Not because of Leo. Not because of this house. But because you are the only home I will ever have?”

Tears of pure joy spilled over her cheeks.

Del dropped to her knees on the stone balcony, throwing her arms around his neck, pulling his face to hers.

“I'm never running again, Sloan,” she breathed against his lips. “I'm home.”

Their lips met in the moonlight.

A kiss that erased three years of separation, healed every scar, and built a sanctuary out of the ashes of an empire.

Inside the nursery, a little boy slept peacefully, breathing the clean ocean air, guarded by the king who had laid down his weapons for love.
