Chapter 7 - A Traitor Among Brothers

The revelation landed like an artillery shell.
Gideon slowly lowered Bennett back to the floor, keeping one massive hand pinned against the doctor’s chest. The air in the archive had turned arctic.
Carlo Moretti had been Gideon’s right-hand man for fifteen years. He had stood beside Gideon at his sister Clara’s funeral, shedding tears and offering condolences. The betrayal cut deeper than any rival gang’s bullet ever could.
“Carlo,” Gideon murmured, the word laced with a quiet, terrifying wrath. “He didn't just want to take my territory. He wanted to destroy my name, my honor, and Clara’s memory.”
“He knew Clara was fragile,” Bennett blurted out, desperate to buy his own survival. “He promised her an elite, private adoption from a mother who didn't want the child. Then he had his operatives fake the car crash when Clara found out the baby was stolen from a charity patient and threatened to go to the authorities. Moretti wanted the child in your care so that when he leaked the paper trail to the federal prosecutor, you would look like the mastermind behind an international infant harvesting ring!”
Mallerie clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white. “You took my baby to use him as a pawn in a mob war.”
Bennett fell to his knees. “I have keys to Moretti’s private offshore ledger! Encrypted flash drives! Everything is in my office safe upstairs! Take it all! Just don’t kill me!”
“Move,” Gideon commanded, yanking Bennett to his feet by his lapels.
They escorted the trembling doctor up the service stairwell toward the private fourth-floor executive suites. Marcus joined them on the landing, his weapon drawn and suppressed.
“Building is clean for now, boss,” Marcus reported. “Moretti’s security team hasn't flagged our van yet.”
They entered Bennett’s luxurious corner office. The doctor frantically punched an eight-digit code into a concealed wall safe behind an oil painting. The heavy door swung open, revealing stacks of cash, international bearer bonds, and a heavy black USB drive labeled VANGUARD MASTER LOGS.
Gideon snatched the drive and handed it to Marcus. “Plug it in. Upload the contents directly to our off-site cloud server.”
Marcus connected the drive to a field tablet. Within seconds, hundreds of patient files, wire transfers, and audio recordings began streaming across the screen.
“It’s all here, Gideon,” Marcus said grimly. “Over forty children stolen over the past eight years. Every payout from Moretti to Bennett and three crooked judges in the appellate district.”
Mallerie looked at the screen, her heart aching for the dozens of other mothers who had wept over empty cribs, believing the same vicious lie she had suffered under for ten agonizing months.
Suddenly, Marcus’s tablet let out a high-pitched alert.
PROXIMITY WARNING: SECTOR 4.
The office double doors were kicked open with violent force.
Before Gideon could raise his weapon, three men in black tactical vests stormed into the room, assault rifles leveled. Behind them stepped Carlo Moretti—tall, impeccably groomed in a gray cashmere overcoat, holding a silver-plated automatic pistol.
“Hello, Gideon,” Moretti said, a chilling smile stretching across his lips. “I had a feeling that banquet slip-up would bring you sniffing around the nursery.”
Gideon shoved Mallerie behind his back, shielding her completely. “Carlo. You murdered Clara.”
“Clara was weak!” Moretti spat, his smile vanishing into pure venom. “She couldn't keep her mouth shut. I gave her what she wanted, and she lost her nerve. And now look at you—the legendary Gideon Vale, brought to his knees by a scullery maid and a stolen bastard.”
Moretti raised his weapon, pointing it directly at Gideon’s chest. “You’ve grown soft, old friend. You should have retired when you had the chance.”
“I’m not the one retiring tonight, Carlo,” Gideon said calmly.
Behind Gideon, Mallerie saw Bennett reaching quietly into his desk drawer for a concealed revolver. She didn't hesitate. Grabbing a heavy marble award from the credenza, she swung it with all her strength against Bennett’s forearm.

The gunshot went off, tearing into the ceiling tiles.
The distraction was all Gideon needed.
