Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Ambush and the Traitor Within

The iron security gates of the Bianchi family’s secluded mountain safehouse swung open automatically as the armored suburban approached.

Towering pine trees flanked the long, winding gravel driveway, their heavy snow-laden branches drooping under the freezing weight of the blizzard.

Lorenzo’s convoy rolled to a smooth stop outside the sprawling stone lodge.

“Rocco, secure the perimeter,” Lorenzo commanded immediately as he killed the engine. “Check all thermal sensors and perimeter tripwires. I don’t trust a single square mile of these woods tonight.”

“On it, Boss,” Rocco muttered, grabbing his tactical rifle and kicking open the passenger door.

Lorenzo turned to Amelia.

She was staring out the frost-covered window at the sprawling, isolated estate, her hands tightly clutching the frayed hem of her oversized parka.

“You’re safe here,” Lorenzo said softly, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her pale forehead. “No one in New York knows about this cabin except Rocco and my inner circle.”

Amelia swallowed hard, her green eyes darting nervously toward the treeline.

“I hope so, Enzo,” she whispered.

They stepped out of the vehicle into the freezing mountain air.

The snow crunched heavily beneath their boots as Lorenzo guided her up the stone steps toward the heavy oak front door.

He punched the digital keypad code, and the heavy reinforced deadbolts clicked open.

They stepped inside into a warm, wood-paneled foyer illuminated by a roaring stone fireplace at the far end of the great room.

“Sit by the fire,” Lorenzo instructed gently, shedding his heavy coat. “I’ll get you some dry clothes and a blanket.”

Amelia walked slowly toward the hearth, holding her frozen hands out toward the crackling flames.

Lorenzo turned toward the hallway leading to the armory.

Click.

The soft, distinctive sound of a rifle bolt sliding into place echoed from the shadows behind him.

Lorenzo froze.

His hand instinctively drifted toward the tactical holster beneath his shoulder.

“Don’t do it, Boss,” a familiar, gravelly voice echoed from the hallway darkness.

Lorenzo slowly turned around.

Rocco stepped out from the shadows of the corridor.

His tactical rifle was raised, leveled directly at the center of Lorenzo’s chest.

Lorenzo stared at his most trusted enforcer, his expression entirely devoid of surprise.

“Rocco,” Lorenzo said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. “You’ve been riding with me for twelve years. You carried me out of the warehouse fire in Brooklyn. Why?”

Rocco’s face twitched, a nervous sweat beading on his forehead despite the freezing temperature in the room.

“Victor Moretti pays better, Boss,” Rocco spat out, his eyes darting sideways. “And unlike you, he doesn’t let sentimentality get in the way of business. The Bianchi family is finished. Tonight.”

Amelia gasped, spinning around from the fireplace.

“Rocco! No! You can’t do this!”

“Shut up, bitch,” Rocco snarled, flicking the safety off his rifle. “If you hadn’t run off like a coward, we wouldn’t have had to play this cat-and-mouse game for two weeks.”

Lorenzo stood completely still, his dark eyes locked onto Rocco’s trembling trigger finger.

“You think you’re the only one who prepared for betrayal, Rocco?” Lorenzo asked calmly.

Rocco frowned, tightening his grip on the weapon. “What are you talking about?”

Click. Whir.

The ceiling-mounted automated defense turrets, hidden behind decorative wooden panels throughout the great room, suddenly dropped down, their red targeting lasers locking instantly onto Rocco’s chest and head.

Rocco’s face turned the color of ash.

“You—you set me up?” Rocco stammered, his eyes darting up toward the laser dots dancing across his tactical vest.

“You forgot the first rule of the Bianchi syndicate,” Lorenzo whispered, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. “Never trust a man who looks you in the eye while he’s counting your money.”

Before Rocco could pull the trigger, the front windows of the safehouse shattered inward in a deafening explosion of flying glass and splintered wood.

Moretti syndicate mercenaries poured through the shattered frames like a wave of black-clad locusts.

Automatic gunfire lit up the dark room in a chaotic strobe of muzzle flashes.

“Get down!” Lorenzo roared, lunging forward and tackling Amelia to the hardwood floor just as a hail of bullets chewed up the stone fireplace above them.

The battle for the safehouse had begun.
