Chapter 2 - THE UNMARKED LEDGER

The seal yielded beneath Adrien’s thumb.

The paper tore with a dry rasp.

Inside lay three folded sheets of translucent carbon paper.

They were not letters.

They were ledger transfers.

Every line recorded offshore wire balances.

Every column bore the official seal of the Voss shipping docks.

The final transfer was dated that morning.

Ten million dollars.

Signed with a forged signature of Adrien Voss.

Beneath the signature lay a single line in Isabella’s clean, quiet script:

"He knows about the vault. Run before five."

Adrien’s jaw tightened until the bone burned.

The clock above Isabella’s small mahogany desk chimed a quarter to four.

Thirty minutes until her train departed North Station.

He crushed the sheets in his fist.

Footsteps echoed down the polished staff corridor.

Marco stepped into the doorway, his silhouette blocking the hall light.

The security chief’s face was pale beneath his stubble.

"Sir," Marco said.

Adrien did not turn around.

"Who let Mercer’s car through the main iron gates?"

Marco kept his hands resting at his sides, fingers rigid.

"The gate logs were wiped remotely at two-fifteen."

"From where?"

"From inside this house."

Adrien slowly smoothed the crumpled ledger paper over the wood desk.

"Isabella didn't have terminal clearance."

"No," Marco said quietly. "Someone gave her an override keycard."

Adrien turned around.

His gray eyes locked onto Marco’s face.

"Or someone dragged her to a terminal."

Marco looked down at the floorboards.

A single droplet of fresh red darkened the pale oak near the edge of the rug.

It was tiny.

Barely larger than a pinhead.

Adrien knelt.

He touched the droplet with the tip of his forefinger.

The blood was barely tacky.

It had not dried yet.

Her sleeve had hidden the bruise on her wrist.

What else had she concealed under that heavy wool coat?

"Bring the car around," Adrien whispered.

Marco did not move immediately.

"Sir, Mercer called a syndication summit for six tonight. If you miss it—"

"I don't care about the summit."

"The council will declare you hostile."

Adrien stood up.

His height towered over Marco in the narrow maid’s quarters.

"Bring the car around."

Marco nodded once and drew his radio.

Adrien walked back through the grand foyer.

The brass estate key still sat on the narrow side table where she had dropped it.

He picked it up.

The metal felt cold against his palm.

Two years she had lived under this roof.

Two years of silent cups of black coffee set beside his midnight contracts.

She had never asked for money.

She had never asked questions about the gunshots in the harbor.

She had only asked for one thing when she arrived: a locked room of her own.

He slipped the key into his overcoat pocket.

The heavy front door groaned open into the biting November wind.

A black armored sedan idled on the gravel circle, its exhaust curling into the gray sky.

Adrien climbed into the rear seat.

"North Station," he ordered. "Break every light."

The driver hit the accelerator.

Tires screamed against the wet gravel.

Adrien pulled out his burner phone.

He dialed Daniel Mercer’s private line.

The line rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

A click sounded on the other end.

A smooth, mocking voice came through the speaker.

"You're home early, Adrien."

Adrien watched the bare winter trees whip past the tinted glass.

"Where is she going, Daniel?"

Mercer laughed softly.

It was a wet, rattling laugh.

"She didn't tell you?"

"I'm asking you."

"Isabella made a choice three hours ago," Mercer said.

"She made a trade."

Adrien’s fingers dug into the leather upholstery.

"What trade?"

"Her life for yours," Mercer replied.

"Check the floorboard beneath your seat, cousin."

The line went dead.

Adrien froze.

His heart struck his ribs with a sudden, deafening thud.

Slowly, without breathing, he lowered his gaze to the dark floor of the speeding car.

Tucked directly beneath his leather seat was a ticking metal brick wired with four blocks of yellow plastic explosive.

The digital timer read: 00:08.
