Chapter 6 - The Interrogation Room Where Scented Masks Begin to Crack

Detective Marcus Reynolds was a towering, gray-haired investigator with twenty-five years on the force and eyes that looked like they had seen every dark corner of the human soul.

He met David in an empty office near the hospital security station, laying a thick manila folder on the table.

“Mr. Vance, we caught her,” Reynolds said without preamble.

David’s heart skipped a beat. “Where?”

“A private motel on the outskirts of Flagstaff,” Reynolds replied. “She was trying to purchase a forged Mexican passport from an undercover operative who was part of an unrelated sting. She had thirty thousand dollars in cash stuffed into a gym bag. She’s currently in custody at the Coconino County Detention Facility.”

A heavy, suffocating weight lifted off David’s shoulders, instantly replaced by a burning desire for truth. “Did she talk?”

Reynolds opened the folder, revealing crime scene photos of the excavated bunker beneath Elena’s home.

“She’s talking, but she’s spewing delusions. She claims she was ‘fostering’ Leo because you and Sarah were neglectful parents—a claim we’ve already completely dismantled through CPS records and witness statements. But here’s the problem, David: Elena Vance is an interior decorator with zero background in structural engineering.”

Reynolds tapped a finger against a high-resolution photograph of the subterranean bunker.

“This bunker wasn't just a dug-out hole with some plywood thrown over it. It has steel support beams, professional soundproofing, a concealed electrical sub-panel tied into the home’s main breaker, and a secondary air-exchange pump hidden inside the decorative fireplace chimney. A woman of her physical build could not have excavated twenty tons of red dirt and poured reinforced concrete footings by herself in secret.”

David leaned forward, staring at the blueprints attached to the file. “Someone helped her build it.”

“Not just helped her build it,” Reynolds said grimly. “Someone designed this before the foundation of that house was even poured. Elena bought that lot eighteen months ago—four months before Leo was abducted at your father’s estate.”

David felt a cold chill wash down the back of his neck. The timeline was horrifying.

“She was planning to take him months before the picnic,” David whispered in utter disbelief. “She built the house specifically for him.”

“Yes,” Reynolds confirmed. “And we pulled the building permits. The general contractor listed on the public record is a legitimate commercial firm, but the subcontractor hired for the ‘custom wine cellar’ foundation was a private LLC named Red Rock Specialty Foundations. The sole owner of that LLC is a man named Thomas Vance Carter.”

David blinked, the name striking him like a physical blow.

“Carter? Uncle Thomas?” David gasped. “My dad’s younger brother?”

“Your estranged uncle,” Reynolds corrected. “The one who was cut out of your father’s will three years ago after embezzling from the family trust. The same uncle who happened to be managing the catering staff at the Texas estate the day Leo disappeared.”

The puzzle pieces fell into place with terrifying, sickening momentum.

The open iron gate.

The lack of forced entry.

The blind spot in the security cameras.

The seamless, untraceable disappearance.

Elena hadn't acted as a lone, spontaneous kidnapper. She had formed an unholy alliance with a bitter, vindictive family member who wanted to tear their family apart from the inside out.
