Chapter 6 - The Foreclosure Deed On The Kitchen Counter

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Luca held the photograph of his fiancée wrapping her arms around the man who had nearly destroyed his family's empire.

“You didn’t just know Victor,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly register. “You were with him.”

Vanessa stopped struggling against the security guard. She smoothed her red gown, her face hardening into a mask of pure spite.

“Victor was twice the man you are, Luca,” she spat. “He actually knew how to enjoy the power he built. You? You just mope around this mausoleum pretending you’re a legitimate businessman.”

“Victor stole forty million dollars,” Luca said. “But he couldn’t access it, could he? The offshore accounts required dual biometric authorization. He ran, but he left the money locked in a vault.”

Vanessa smiled, a cold, predatory grin.

“He didn’t leave it. He died,” she said smoothly. “A heart attack in Geneva three years ago. So tragic.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed. The puzzle pieces were violently snapping together.

“The offshore accounts,” Luca deduced quietly. “If a partner dies, their share defaults back to the primary account holder. Me.”

“Exactly,” Vanessa said, stepping forward, testing the grip of the security guard. “And once I became Mrs. Luca Moretti, the spousal override clause in your syndicate’s charter would have given me full access to everything. I didn’t want you, Luca. I wanted Victor’s money.”

She had poisoned Sarah to clear the path.

She had forged the boarding school deposit to get Matteo out of the house, ensuring no heirs would interfere with the inheritance.

She had orchestrated a five-year long-con just to unlock a vault.

“You murdered my mother for money,” Matteo whispered, tears of profound grief and rage spilling down his young face.

Vanessa looked at the thirteen-year-old boy with absolute disgust.

“Your mother was in the way, you little brat.”

Luca moved so fast I barely saw it.

In one stride, he crossed the room, grabbing Vanessa by the throat of her expensive silk gown. He slammed her back against the marble wall.

The thud echoed through the room.

“Do not speak to my son,” Luca snarled, his face inches from hers, his control completely shattered.

For the first time, genuine fear flashed in Vanessa’s eyes. She was finally face-to-face with the monster the rest of the city knew Luca to be.

But she was a survivor. She had one last card to play.

She choked, gasping for air, and locked her eyes on me.

“You think… you won… you little rat?” she wheezed.

I stood frozen.

Vanessa managed a desperate, suffocated laugh.

“Your mother… Elena…”

My heart stopped. “What about my mother?”

“Did you really think… I wouldn’t do a background check… on the maid who spends so much time… with my future stepson?”

Luca didn’t loosen his grip, but his eyes darted to me.

Vanessa reached a trembling hand into the bodice of her gown. She pulled out a folded piece of thick, legal parchment.

She let it drop to the marble floor.

“Read it,” she choked out.

I walked forward on trembling legs. I picked up the paper and unfolded it.

At the top, in bold black letters, were the words:

NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE FORECLOSURE AND EVICTION.

Beneath it was my mother’s address. The small house my father had built. The house where my mother, frail and recovering from a stroke, currently lived.

“The mortgage,” I whispered, panic seizing my chest. “We were two months behind, but the bank gave us an extension—”

“The bank sold the debt,” Vanessa sneered, rubbing her throat as Luca slightly eased his grip to hear her. “To a private holding company. My holding company. I bought your pathetic little house, Claire. And I signed the eviction order this afternoon.”

Tears blurred my vision. “You can’t do that.”

“The sheriff will be at her door at 8:00 AM tomorrow,” Vanessa smiled maliciously. “They’ll drag her out of her bed and throw her on the curb. Unless…”

Luca’s eyes darkened. “Unless what?”

Vanessa looked at him, her confidence returning.

“Unless you let me walk out of here right now. Let me leave the state with the jewelry I’m wearing and the cash in my safe. Call off your dogs, Luca. If you touch me, if you call the police, the order stands. The maid’s mother dies in the street.”

She had cornered us.

She was trading my mother’s life for her freedom.

I looked at Luca. I knew he wanted to destroy her. I knew he owed her nothing but pain for what she did to Sarah.

“Let her go,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Please, Mr. Moretti. I can’t lose my mother.”

Vanessa smirked. “Listen to the help, Luca.”

Luca stared at Vanessa for three agonizing seconds.

Then, he calmly released her throat.

Vanessa took a deep breath, smoothing her dress, a victorious glint in her eye.

But Luca didn’t step back.

He reached down and gently took the foreclosure deed from my trembling hands.

He looked at it.

Then, without breaking eye contact with Vanessa, Luca ripped the heavy parchment straight down the middle.
