Chapter 8 - THE REVERSAL

“Vanessa, stop,” I said, stepping between the gun and Julian.

She laughed, a sharp, ugly sound. “Get out of the way, Emma. You’ve played your part. You led Luca right to the slaughter.”

“He knows everything,” Julian said, his voice steady despite his weakness. “He knows you kept me alive to steal the trust. He knows about Leo.”

“And none of that matters,” Vanessa sneered. “Because in five minutes, the police will arrive. They’ll find the famous, ruthless Luca Moretti standing over the body of his long-lost twin brother. A tragic dispute over the family fortune.”

“Why?” I asked, trying to keep her talking. “You’re already rich. Why go to these lengths?”

Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, vicious hatred.

“Because his mother ruined mine!” she spat. “Lucia Moretti discovered my father was embezzling from the company. She was going to ruin us. So my father made a deal with their father. Silence, in exchange for control.”

She cocked the hammer of the gun.

“Luca rejected me for years. He treated me like a nuisance. I earned this empire.”

She aimed squarely at Julian’s chest.

“Goodbye, Julian.”

A massive crash echoed through the room.

The heavy oak door didn’t just open—it splintered inward, the hinges screaming as it collapsed.

Luca stood in the doorway.

He didn’t have his gun raised. He didn’t look angry.

He looked at the woman who had tormented his family for two decades.

“It’s over, Vanessa,” he said calmly.

She spun the gun toward him. “If you take one step, I’ll kill her.” She pointed it at me.

Luca didn’t stop. He walked directly toward the barrel of the gun.

“You aren’t going to shoot anyone,” Luca said.

“Try me!” she screamed.

“Look out the window.”

Vanessa frowned. She didn’t lower the gun, but she glanced toward the velvet curtains.

Blue and red lights flashed against the glass. Sirens wailed, but they weren’t approaching. They were already parked on the lawn. Dozens of them.

“They’re here for me,” Vanessa said confidently. “My father made the call.”

“Your father is in federal custody,” Luca said.

Vanessa froze.

“While your men were busy attacking a maid’s house, I made a few phone calls of my own. To the FBI. I gave them twenty years of financial records. The embezzlement. The bribes at St. Catherine’s hospital. The trust fraud.”

“You’re bluffing,” she whispered, her hands shaking.

Luca reached into his pocket and tossed a small object onto the floor.

It rolled to Vanessa’s feet.

It was her father’s heavy gold signet ring.

“He gave it to them when they arrested him at the airport an hour ago.” Luca’s voice was ice. “You have nothing left.”

The pearl-handled gun trembled in her hand. She looked at Luca, then at Julian, and finally at me.

With a defeated sob, the gun slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor.

Luca stepped forward and kicked the weapon away.

He didn’t look at her again.

He turned to the man sitting in the chair.

Twenty-two years of grief, anger, and lies vanished in an instant.

Luca fell to his knees in front of his brother.

Julian reached out, grabbing the back of Luca’s neck, pulling him into a desperate, crushing embrace.

Both men wept, the sound heavy and raw in the quiet room.

I backed away, giving them the space they had been robbed of.

As I looked around the room, I noticed the small wooden sewing box resting on a side table.

The lid was open.

It had done its job.
