Chapter 11 - THE SILENCE IN THE DARK

The darkness was absolute.
Instantly, a heavy, suffocating silence descended over the hospital ward. No machines beeped. No nurses called out. The kind of silence that meant someone had deliberately cut the main power and jammed the emergency backups.
“Claire?” Sophie’s voice trembled in the dark, small and frightened.
“I’m here, sweetie,” I whispered, squeezing her hand tightly. “Don’t make a sound.”
I reached into my pocket, my fingers brushing the brass keys Luca had just given me. The promise of a safe, beautiful future was sitting right in my hand, but the ghosts of the Rossi ledger had followed me to the one place I couldn't run from.
Answer One: The syndicate wasn't dead. A higher power was coming to collect.
I pulled my phone out, shielding the screen with my jacket to minimize the glow. No signal. They had jammed the cell towers too.
I had to get Sophie out of this bed.
“Up, Soph, come on,” I whispered, helping her sit up. She was still dizzy from the anesthesia, leaning heavily against me.
I guided her toward the heavy wooden door of the recovery room. I cracked it open an inch.
The hallway was bathed in the eerie red glow of a single exit sign at the far end.
Standing beneath that red light were two men in hospital scrubs. But they weren't doctors. They held suppressed submachine guns, sweeping the hallway with terrifying, practiced precision.
“Clear the rooms,” one of them muttered. “Find the girl.”
I pulled the door shut, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I looked frantically around the room. Second floor. The window was too high to jump with a groggy child. The door was a death trap.
But my father had taught me something vital about silence. When you can't rely on sound to know your surroundings, you rely on vibration.
I placed my palm flat against the cold tiled floor.
I felt the rhythmic, heavy thud of combat boots approaching. But beneath that, I felt something else. A lighter, faster vibration coming from the air vent near the ceiling.
Someone was moving through the ducts.
The metal grate above the bed suddenly popped open, falling silently onto the mattress.
A figure dropped down into the dark room.
I grabbed a heavy metal IV pole, ready to swing, when a strong hand caught the metal rod effortlessly.
“Easy,” a familiar, deep voice whispered.
It was Luca.
He was holding a tactical flashlight, its beam pointed safely at the floor. His eyes were cold, dangerous, and completely focused. The peaceful man in the waiting room was gone. The mafia boss had returned.
“You didn’t leave,” I breathed, tears of relief pricking my eyes.
“I never leave you,” Luca said softly. He looked at Sophie, giving her a reassuring nod. “We have three minutes before those men breach this door. We’re going out the window.”
“It’s a twenty-foot drop!” I whispered.
Luca reached into his tactical bag and pulled out a heavy coil of climbing rope. He tied it securely to the solid steel frame of the hospital bed in seconds.
“I’ll go down first. Lower Sophie to me, then climb down yourself,” he ordered.
He forced the window open. The cold Chicago wind rushed in.
Suddenly, the door handle rattled.
“Room 214 is locked,” a muffled voice said from the hallway. “Kick it.”
Open Two: How did they know exactly which room we were in?
“Go, now!” Luca hissed, swinging himself out the window and sliding down the rope with terrifying speed.
I grabbed Sophie, lifting her onto the windowsill.
BOOM.
The door buckled inward under a heavy kick.
I lowered Sophie out the window, praying Luca was there. The rope went slack. He had her.
I threw my leg over the sill just as the hospital door splintered open.
The red laser of a gun sight swept across the dark room, landing directly on my chest.
“Stop right there, Claire,” a voice commanded.
I froze.
The man stepped into the room, holding a suppressed pistol. He pulled off his surgical mask.
The reversal made my stomach plummet into a freefall.
It was Dr. Evans. The surgeon who had just operated on my sister.
“You exposed the ledger,” Dr. Evans said, his voice completely devoid of the warmth he had shown earlier. “Do you know how many prominent men in this city relied on Vincenzo’s money? You ruined us.”
He raised the gun, aiming directly at my head.

“And now, you pay the debt.”
