Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ledger Beneath the Floorboards

Nora didn't flinch at Julian’s insult. Instead, she walked across the kitchen to the old brick hearth where the woodstove sat cold and silent. She knelt down, reached her hand behind the iron chimney pipe, and pressed a loose cedar plank near the baseboard.

The plank popped up with a dry snap.

From the hidden cavity beneath the floor, Nora pulled out a thick, black leather-bound ledger wrapped securely in clear plastic to protect it from the damp mountain air.

Julian’s eyes widened with pure terror.

"What is that?" Julian stammered, his confident smirk completely disintegrating.

"This is the actual logbook of every single visit you made to this house, Julian," Nora said calmly, unwrapping the plastic. "Every date. Every time you brought Victoria Sterling here while Caleb was overseas. Every conversation you had with the local notary whom you bribed with ten thousand dollars to forge Evelyn’s signature on the timberland transfer while she was unconscious in the ICU."

Julian lunged forward to snatch the book, but Caleb caught him by the collar of his expensive camel-hair coat with one hand, slamming him violently against the kitchen wall. The force of the impact rattled the hanging copper pots.

"Touch her, and you won't walk out of this valley," Caleb whispered into Julian’s ear, his voice deadly and cold.

"It’s a lie!" Julian choked out, clawing at Caleb’s iron grip. "It’s fabricated! No court will accept a handwritten notebook from a bitter ex-wife!"

"It’s not just a handwritten notebook, Julian," Nora continued, opening the front cover. "Inside this binder are audio recordings on three separate flash drives. In North Carolina, it is completely legal to record a conversation as long as one party consents. And since I was in the next room administering Evelyn’s nebulizer treatments while you and Victoria laughed about how easy it was to bleed Caleb Hartman’s family dry... every single word you spoke in this kitchen is preserved in high-definition audio."

Julian’s knees went weak. If Caleb hadn't been holding him by the collar, he would have collapsed onto the floorboards.

"You recorded Victoria?" Julian whispered in horror.

"Every single visit," Nora said evenly. "Including the day Victoria handed you the forged power-of-attorney documents and instructed you to make sure Evelyn Hartman never received the registered letters from the Chicago corporate headquarters."

Caleb shoved Julian backward into the wooden armchair. Julian landed hard, breathing heavily, his designer composure utterly annihilated.

"Here is what is going to happen right now, Julian," Caleb said, towering over the trembling man. "You are going to take your phone out of your pocket. You are going to call your corporate attorney in Asheville. And you are going to instruct him to execute an immediate, unconditional quitclaim deed transferring all forty acres of the Hartman timberland back into my mother’s name by noon today."

Julian looked up, his eyes wild with panic. "And if I don't?"

"If that deed is not recorded at the county courthouse by twelve o'clock sharp," Caleb replied, pulling out his own phone, "these audio files, along with seven years of forensic banking records, will be delivered directly to the United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina and the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. You will be indicted for wire fraud, elder abuse, bank fraud, and grand larceny before the sun goes down."

Julian stared at Caleb, realizing with absolute certainty that his stepbrother possessed the financial resources and the corporate legal power to bury him under federal indictments for the next thirty years.

"And what about Victoria?" Julian croaked, his voice cracking. "She was the architect of the whole thing! She told me you would never check the local accounts! She’s the one who diverted your mother's mail!"

Caleb’s expression became completely unreadable.

"Victoria is my problem," Caleb said coldly. "Now make the call. And then get off my mother’s land before I have the sheriff drag you out in handcuffs."

Julian scrambled for his phone with shaking fingers, his polished exterior completely shattered as he dialed his attorney, weeping with panic.
