Chapter 3 - THE GIRLS’ SECRET BOX

Around noon, something happened Chadworth had never seen.

Rosamund took the girls into the pantry.

Not suspicious by itself.

Except Gemma closed the door.

The pantry contained no camera.

Chadworth immediately looked at Marcus.

“Blind spot.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Food storage. No reason to place one there.”

Five minutes.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Chadworth’s suspicion returned despite everything.

What were they doing?

Then the pantry door opened.

Rosamund emerged carrying a small shoebox.

Gemma followed.

Lorelai carried a notebook.

They went into the breakfast room.

Camera active.

Rosamund placed the box on the table.

Gemma whispered:

“We should show Dad.”

Rosamund said:

“You should.”

Lorelai looked frightened.

“But if he gets mad?”

Rosamund answered:

“Then I’ll be there.”

Chadworth’s chest tightened.

Gemma opened the box.

Inside were objects.

Photographs.

Notes.

A broken necklace.

A small voice recorder.

Chadworth sat forward.

“What is that?”

Marcus said:

“Keep watching.”

Gemma picked up the necklace.

“Sabina broke this.”

Chadworth recognized it.

It had belonged to their mother, Elise.

She had given it to Gemma shortly before dying from ovarian cancer three years earlier.

Gemma had told him it broke at school.

Sabina had helped “replace” the chain.

Gemma whispered:

“She said Mommy jewelry was babyish.”

Chadworth closed his eyes.

Lorelai opened the notebook.

Children’s handwriting.

Dates.

Short sentences.

Sabina said Rosie smells poor.

Sabina told Gemma Dad will stop loving sad girls.

Sabina said don’t cry at dinner.

Sabina said Daddy needs happy daughters.

Then:

Sabina took the picture of Mommy down and said we need to move forward.

Chadworth’s throat closed.

He remembered.

The framed photograph from the upstairs hall had disappeared six weeks earlier.

Sabina said Rosamund broke the frame while dusting.

Rosamund had apologized.

Chadworth had accepted it.

She took blame for something she had not done.

Why?

The answer came seconds later.

Gemma asked:

“Why did you say you broke Mommy’s picture?”

Rosamund looked at her.

“Because you were standing there.”

Gemma’s eyes filled.

“I could’ve told Dad.”

“You were already crying.”

“So?”

“So I wanted the room to calm down.”

Gemma whispered:

“You lied.”

Rosamund nodded.

“Yes.”

She did not excuse it.

Then:

“And I should not have.”

Chadworth stared.

Rosamund continued:

“I thought protecting you meant absorbing some things quietly.”

She looked at both girls.

“I was wrong.”

That sentence cut deeper than Sabina’s lies.

Because Rosamund understood something Chadworth had failed to understand:

Silence could protect the wrong person.

Then Gemma turned on the voice recorder.

Sabina’s voice filled the breakfast room.

Your father is marrying me. You need to start acting grateful.

Lorelai, crying:

I want Daddy.

Sabina:

Daddy is busy because adults have real problems.

Then:

Rosamund won’t be here forever. Staff come and go. Family stays.

The recording ended.

Chadworth whispered:

“Jesus.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“How long?”

Chadworth looked at the notebook.

The earliest date was almost four months old.

Four months.

He had been sleeping under the same roof.

Eating dinner at the same table.

Kissing Sabina goodnight.

And his daughters had been documenting her behavior because they did not believe their father would see it without proof.

May you like

The realization made him sick.
