Chapter 14 - A Mother’s Apology and a Broken Past

Two days later, the morning of Chloe’s wedding arrived.
The ceremony was held at the grand Cathedral of the Holy Name in downtown Chicago, followed by a reception at the historic Drake Hotel.
When the massive, armored Rossi motorcade pulled up to the Drake Hotel, the valet and hotel security cleared the entire entrance immediately. Word had spread through high society of Roman’s absolute victory, and his presence was now treated with the reverence reserved for royalty.
Sadi stepped out of the Maybach looking like a vision of pure elegance.
She wore a custom-designed, off-the-shoulder gown of rich champagne satin that sculpted her lush curves with jaw-dropping perfection. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate, regal updo, crowned with diamond pins, and the new custom emerald ring sparkled brilliantly on her left hand.
Roman walked beside her, impeccably tailored in a classic black tuxedo, his hand resting possessively on her lower back.
As they entered the grand ballroom, the entire room went silent for a moment before erupting into polite, respectful greetings. High-society matrons who had once ignored Sadi now rushed forward to compliment her gown, while corporate executives practically tripped over themselves to shake Roman’s hand.
Near the bridal suite corridor, Brenda Miller was standing alone, looking nervous, humble, and thoroughly defeated.
When Brenda saw Sadi approaching, she hesitated, then walked slowly toward her daughter. Gone was the arrogant, demanding woman of two weeks ago. In her place was a mother who finally understood the terrifying scale of the world she had tried to manipulate.
"Sadi," Brenda said quietly, her voice devoid of its usual sharp edge.
Roman’s hand tightened slightly on Sadi’s waist, but Sadi placed a gentle hand on his forearm, signaling that she was in complete control.
"Mother," Sadi replied evenly.
Brenda looked at Sadi’s radiant, confident posture, then glanced at the emerald ring on her finger. A genuine, sorrowful tear slipped down her mother's cheek.
"I... I came to apologize," Brenda whispered, looking down at her trembling hands. "Not because Mr. Rossi holds those papers over me. But because... seeing you today, seeing how strong and beautiful you are... I realized how terribly I failed you."
Sadi listened in quiet stillness.
"I spent twenty years trying to force you to fit into a mold that was too small for you," Brenda sobbed softly. "I was insecure, I was petty, and I treated my own daughter like an inconvenience because I couldn't understand your worth. You deserved a mother who celebrated you, Sadi. And I am so, so sorry."
Sadi looked at her mother for a long moment. The pain of the past didn't vanish instantly, but the crushing weight of it—the insecurity that had haunted her for a decade—evaporated completely.
"I forgive you, Brenda," Sadi said, her voice calm, mature, and completely free of bitterness. "For my own peace, I forgive you. But my life belongs here now. With Roman."
Brenda nodded tearfully, stepping back with a respectful bow of her head. "I know. He looks at you the way every woman dreams of being looked at. Be happy, my darling."
As Brenda walked away to join the bridal party, Roman leaned down, kissing Sadi softly on the cheek.

"You handled that with immense grace, my empress," he murmured.
Sadi looked up at him, her heart overflowing with love and peace. "I don't need to fight the past anymore, Roman. My future is standing right in front of me."
