Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Moretti Empire

Forty-eight hours after we retrieved the black ledger from the Berkshires, the United States Department of Justice, backed by over three hundred federal marshals, executed the largest organized crime raid in American history.

The encrypted drive my mother had protected for fifteen years contained undeniable, cryptographic proof of Vincent Moretti’s entire transnational network: bribe payouts to corrupt politicians, illegal shipping manifests, and audio recordings proving he had personally ordered the assassination of Roberto and Isabella Falcone in 2009.

Television screens across the country broadcasted the sensational news.

“Breaking News: Multi-Billion Dollar Crime Syndicate Dismantled in Historic Joint Operation. Vincent Moretti and forty-two high-ranking associates arrested without bail. Falcone Holdings cleared of all legacy charges and recognized as legitimate maritime trust.”

I watched the broadcast from the luxury lounge of the Boston Children's Hospital penthouse suite. Lily was sitting beside me, eating strawberry ice cream, her color significantly healthier thanks to the preparatory treatments.

The door opened, and Roman, Declan, and Gabriel walked in. They were dressed in tailored dark suits, looking immaculate, though the weight of a fifteen-year war had finally lifted from their shoulders.

“It’s done,” Roman announced, walking over and kissing the top of Lily’s head, then turning to look at me. “Vincent was denied bail. He’ll spend the rest of his life in ADX Florence supermax prison. The Moretti family is extinct.”

Lily clapped her hands in delight. “Does that mean Maeve doesn't have to clean houses anymore?”

Declan laughed loudly, picking Lily up and spinning her around gently, making her giggle. “Little bird, your sister owns half of the Atlantic shipping ports now. If she ever touches a mop again, I’m throwing it into the ocean.”

Gabriel walked over to the table, tossing a glossy legal document in front of me. “Here’s the official paperwork from the trust attorneys. Clara’s share of the Falcone-Vance estate has been fully restored. Maeve Carter, you and Lily are officially worth roughly two point eight billion dollars.”

I stared at the staggering number on the paper, feeling a strange mix of disbelief and overwhelming gratitude. Only five days ago, I had twelve dollars in my pocket and was contemplating skipping meals so Lily could have an inhaler.

“What do we even do with that much money?” I whispered.

Roman stepped beside my chair, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on my shoulder. “We do what Clara asked. We rebuild. We fund pediatric cardiac research centers across the globe in Lily’s name. We build legitimate businesses. And we live without fear.”

The door to the suite opened again, and Dr. Marcus, the nation’s leading pediatric surgeon, stepped in with a warm, confident smile.

“Miss Carter? The surgical theater is prepared. Lily’s new heart valve is ready, and our team is ready to begin.”

My stomach knotted with a mother’s anxiety, but Lily grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly.

“Don't worry, Maeve,” Lily smiled bravely, pointing at Roman, Declan, and Gabriel. “I’ve got three giant bodyguards watching the door. I’m going to be completely fine.”

As the medical team wheeled Lily’s bed toward the operating room, Roman, Declan, and Gabriel stood shoulder-to-shoulder behind me, their presence an unbreakable wall of protection.
