Chapter 12 - THE GLASS CATACLYSM

The sudden detonation of forty high-pressure Halon nozzles turned the penthouse into a swirling white hurricane.

Dense chemical gas flooded the room, stripping the air of oxygen.

The alarms shrieked with deafening, ear-splitting fury.

Automated emergency strobes flashed bloody crimson against the fog.

Dominic Sterling staggered through the mist, coughing violently, his hand clutching a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol.

"Kill them!" Dominic screamed, his voice muffled by the gas.

"Kill them all!"

The two remaining mercenaries were coughing, their eyes streaming with tears from the chemical fog.

They fired blindly into the white haze.

Adrian moved through the smoke like a phantom.

He didn't fire his weapon.

He closed the distance on the first guard with silent, deadly speed.

He caught the man’s gun wrist, twisted it inward until the bone snapped, and drove his heel into the back of the mercenary's knee.

The man collapsed to the marble floor, unconscious before he hit the tiles.

The second mercenary turned, tracking the sound of the scuffle.

Before he could raise his weapon, Emma hurled a heavy bronze drafting ruler through the smoke.

The steel edge struck the guard squarely in the forehead.

He stumbled backward, disoriented.

Adrian closed the gap, delivering a crushing right hook to the man's jaw.

The guard crumpled against the shattered desk.

Across the room, Dominic Sterling scrambled toward the private terrace overlooking the city.

He pushed open the heavy glass doors into the freezing morning wind.

The fog on the terrace had begun to glow with the first pale gold light of dawn.

Adrian pursued him, stepping out onto the wet granite tiles of the observation deck.

Emma followed close behind, holding a heavy tactical flashlight like a club.

Dominic stood near the glass perimeter railing, sixty-four stories above the miniature streets of Chicago.

His expensive suit was soaked with foam and soot.

His hair was wild, his eyes wide with cornered, feral desperation.

He held his gold gun with both shaking hands, aimed straight at Adrian's chest.

"You think you won, Adrian?" Dominic yelled over the roar of the wind.

"I still have the board of directors!"

"I still have the federal judges in my pocket!"

"Your company is dead!"

Adrian stopped ten paces away.

His Colt was lowered at his side.

He stood tall, broad-shouldered, completely unafraid of the weapon pointed at his heart.

"You don't have the judges, Dominic," Adrian said.

His voice carried effortlessly through the howling wind.

"What?" Dominic sneered.

"The Halon override didn't just fry your hard drives," Emma spoke from Adrian's side.

Dominic’s eyes flicked to her in confusion.

"The city fire code requires all commercial deluge activations to automatically dump the building's central server logs to the Department of Justice," Emma explained.

A cold smile touched her lips.

"Every wire transfer."

"Every illegal weapon shipment."

"Every bribe paid to the municipal commission."

"It was all transmitted to Assistant Director Vance at the FBI three minutes ago."

Dominic’s face turned the color of wet chalk.

The realization settled into his bones like terminal frost.

His entire multi-billion-dollar empire hadn't just been stopped.

It had been delivered directly to federal prosecutors with an architectural bow on top.

"No," Dominic whimpered, shaking his head.

"No, no, no..."

His hands began to shake violently.

His eyes darted from Adrian to Emma.

"I'll take you with me!" Dominic roared.

He pulled the hammer back on his gold gun, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Adrian lunged forward.

A gunshot cracked like thunder against the morning sky.

The bullet tore through Adrian’s right forearm, spraying blood across the wet granite.

Adrian didn't even slow down.

He absorbed the impact, closed the distance in a single heartbeat, and slammed into Dominic with the force of an avalanche.

Both men crashed violently into the reinforced glass perimeter railing.

The thick safety glass groaned under their combined weight, spider-webbing into a thousand glittering fractures.

Dominic’s gun flew from his grip, tumbling over the ledge into sixty-four stories of empty air.

Adrian pinned Dominic against the cracked glass, his left hand clamped around Dominic's throat.

Dominic choked, his heels kicking frantically against the granite.

"Adrian... wait..." Dominic gasped, his eyes rolling back in terror.

"We can... we can split it..."

Adrian’s face was inches from his.

Cold.

Pitiless.

The predator who had ruled Chicago’s shadows for a decade.

"You threatened her," Adrian whispered.

His voice was so low it was terrifying.

"You brought violence into her world."

"You made her bleed."

Adrian’s fingers tightened on Dominic's windpipe.

The glass railing behind Dominic cracked further, bowing outward toward the abyss.

"Adrian!"

Emma's voice cut through the wind.

Adrian froze.

He looked over his shoulder.

Emma stood on the terrace, her hair whipping in the dawn breeze.

She looked at him.

Not with fear.

With a profound, steady clarity that saw right through the monster to the man underneath.

"Don't," Emma said softly.

"He's already finished."

"The FBI is in the lobby."

"Don't become what he is."

Adrian looked back down at Dominic.

Dominic was weeping, terrified, gasping for air like a drowning rat.

He wasn't an empire builder.

He was just a pathetic, greedy coward who hid behind hired guns and stolen blueprints.

Adrian let out a slow, long breath.

He opened his fingers.

Dominic dropped to the wet granite, retching and sobbing, curling into a pathetic ball against the cracked glass.

Adrian stepped back.

He turned toward Emma.

The morning sun finally crested the horizon over Lake Michigan, flooding the terrace with pure, golden light.

Adrian walked over to her.

He reached up with his trembling, blood-stained hand and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"You're safe now, Emma," he breathed.

"We're both safe," she whispered, leaning her forehead against his chest.

Behind them, the heavy stairwell doors burst open.

Dozens of federal tactical agents in green Kevlar swarmed the terrace, rifles raised.

"FBI! Nobody move!"

May you like

Adrian didn't move.

He just kept his arms wrapped around the woman who had asked to share his sesame noodles.
