Chapter 15 - The Recipe for a New Legacy

Six months later, spring had returned to New York in full bloom.

The old Marchesi warehouse in Red Hook had been completely transformed into the Salvatore & Ada Community Center.

Every week, hundreds of retired local workers gathered there for free medical care, hot meals, legal support, and family celebrations.

In federal court, Celeste Marchesi was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for grand larceny, extortion, and fraud.

Her brother Enzo received five years for assault and racketeering.

The Marchesi syndicate was wiped from the city’s history books, forgotten like dust in the wind.

On a bright Sunday afternoon, the Romano estate was filled with the sound of music once again.

I stood on the stone balcony overlooking the gardens, looking down at the newly planted rose bushes Don Salvatore had loved so much.

Two hands gently rested on my waist from behind.

I leaned back against Vincent’s broad chest, feeling the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

“What are you thinking about?” Vincent whispered into my ear, kissing my cheek softly.

“I’m thinking about the first day I came to this house,” I smiled, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark, loving eyes. “I was so nervous I almost dropped the silver platters.”

Vincent laughed, his fingers gently tracing the gold olive branch necklace around my neck.

“And now you run this estate,” Vincent said. “You direct our foundations, you protect our people, and you hold my heart in your hands.”

Vincent reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small black velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

He knelt down on one knee on the sunlit stone balcony.

He opened the box to reveal a stunning, simple, brilliant-cut diamond ring—a new ring, crafted especially for us, shining with pure, untainted light.

“Grace Miller,” Vincent said, his voice trembling with genuine emotion. “You showed me what true loyalty, courage, and love look like. You brought life and truth back to this family when we were lost in the dark.”

He looked up at me, his eyes full of devotion.

“Will you marry me and build a new legacy by my side?”

Tears of pure happiness filled my eyes.

“Yes,” I breathed, a radiant smile breaking across my face. “Yes, Vincent! A thousand times yes!”

Vincent slipped the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss as the warm spring breeze swirled around us.

From down in the courtyard, we heard the sound of joyful shouting.

Ada, Marco, Carlo, and all our friends were standing by the fountain, waving their glasses and cheering with pure joy.

“Save a corner piece for the wedding!” Ada shouted up at us with a beaming laugh.

Vincent and I looked down at them, our fingers intertwined, our hearts completely at peace.

The past was forgiven.

The wicked had fallen.

And at the Romano table, there would always be an open chair, a warm plate, and a family bound by love that could never be broken.

THE END
