Chapter 7 - The Traitor in the Ranks and the Locked Safe

We returned to the estate under heavy armed escort. The tension inside the convoy was thick enough to choke on.
Luca was silent during the entire drive, his jaw clenched, his mind racing through tactical maneuvers. The moment we crossed the iron gates, he barked a series of rapid orders in Italian to Dante, sending teams to reinforce the perimeter and double the harbor patrols.
"Are you all right?" Luca asked, turning to me as we entered the grand foyer.
"I'm fine," I said, though my hands were still shaking from the confrontation. "Luca... Jake won't stop. I saw his eyes. He is completely desperate. When a man like that has nothing left to lose, he becomes completely reckless."
"He has everything to lose," Luca said darkly. "His life. And I intend to take it before he takes another breath in this city."
Luca retreated to his war room on the third floor with his lieutenants, while I went upstairs to check on Emma.
She was fast asleep in her small four-poster bed, clutching her favorite plush rabbit. I sat on the edge of her mattress, smoothing the curls away from her forehead, my heart aching with a mixture of terror and fierce protective fury. I had brought her into this gilded fortress to save her, but the shadow of her father’s sins hung over us like an executioner’s axe.
Needing a glass of water to calm my frayed nerves, I slipped out of the nursery and walked down toward the kitchen.
As I passed the dark corridor leading to the secondary offices, I noticed a sliver of light coming from the accounting suite—a room that should have been locked at two in the morning.
I slowed my footsteps, the carpet muffling the sound of my orthopedic boot.
Through the cracked doorway, I saw Marco—the manager from Marino’s Diner.
My heart skipped a beat. What was Marco doing in the private estate at two in the morning?
Luca had hired Marco’s brother as a logistical coordinator last week, but Marco had no security clearance for this wing of the house.
Marco was standing in front of the wall safe, his hands frantically snapping photos of shipping manifests and security access codes with a burner phone.
"Yeah, I got them," Marco whispered into a wireless earpiece, his voice trembling with panic. "The south gate codes and the shift change schedule for Pier 42. Tell Jake to have Moretti’s men ready by four in the morning. If I don't get the five hundred grand Moretti promised, I'm going straight to the feds."
A gasp caught in my throat.
Marco wasn't just a diner manager. He was Moretti’s inside man. He had been monitoring me at the diner for months, feeding information to Jake and the syndicate.
I tried to back away quietly to alert Dante, but the hem of my silk gown caught on the edge of a bronze pedestal. The heavy antique vase wobbled and crashed to the floor.

Marco spun around, his eyes wide with terror.
"Ava?"
