Chapter 11 - THE CHESTNUT STREET VAULT

"Don't touch that box, Lily," Vanessa purred, stepping into the vault.
Her heels clicked sharply against the polished granite floor.
Her eyes were bloodshot, her makeup slightly smeared, but her cruel smile was wider than ever.
"Did you really think you could outsmart my father?" Vanessa mocked.
"We have tracking software on Harold’s workstation. The second he typed in Box 412, our phones alerted us."
Charles Price stepped forward, adjusting his gold cufflinks.
He looked at Arthur Calder with absolute disdain.
"You should have stayed in the river, Arthur," Charles said, his voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of any human empathy.
"You're old. You're obsolete. The hospitality industry isn't about soup and clean sheets anymore."
"It's about leverage. International capital. Shell companies."
"It's about money laundering, Charles," Arthur countered, standing tall and unmoving before the table.
"You sold our family name to Russian cartels."
Charles shrugged indifferently.
"They pay on time. And they pay in cash."
Charles glanced at his diamond-encrusted watch.
"It is 7:15 AM. The board convenes in forty-five minutes on the 45th floor of Calder Tower."
"They are already prepared to vote in favor of the merger."
"And once the vote is certified, your precious 51% control will be liquidated into our offshore entity."
"The board won't vote for you if they see this ledger," Julian said, his hand resting near his hip.
"They won't see it," Vanessa snapped.
She raised the pearl-handled pistol, pointing it directly between my eyes.
"And they won't see this filthy little maid ever again."
My heart hammered in my throat, but I didn't look away from her.
I took a slow, deep breath, just as Julian had taught me in the dark.
"You really hate me, don't you, Vanessa?" I said, my voice steady, calm, and deliberate.
"Hate you?" Vanessa laughed, a high, hysterical sound.
"You are nothing, Lily! You're a bug I should have squashed under my shoe the first day you served me water!"
"You ruined my life over an eighteen-dollar bowl of soup!"
"No," I replied, looking her dead in the eye.
"You ruined your own life because you thought money made you a god."
Vanessa’s face twisted in rage.
"Die, you little bitch!"
Her finger tightened on the trigger.
Before she could pull it, Arthur slammed his fist onto the red emergency lockdown button mounted beneath the viewing table.
KLAXON! KLAXON! KLAXON!
A deafening siren blasted through the vault.
The hydraulic pressure seals hissed violently.
The three-ton circular steel vault door began to swing shut on its emergency tracks.
"Get out!" Charles screamed, panic cracking his cultured demeanor.
The guards turned to scramble for the shrinking opening.
Julian moved with terrifying speed.
He lunged forward, grabbed Vanessa’s wrist, and twisted it downward.
The .22 fired into the floor, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly off the reinforced granite.
The gun clattered across the room.
Julian shoved Vanessa backward into her father’s arms.
The massive vault door slammed shut with the force of an earthquake.
THUD.
The magnetic locks engaged.
We were trapped inside the vault.
With Charles Price.
With Vanessa Price.

And their four armed guards.
