Chapter 10 - The Turning of the Tide

Carlo didn’t walk alone.

Behind him were five heavily armed men wearing the crest of the Vitale family—one of the most powerful syndicates in Italy.

They raised their weapons, immediately outnumbering and outgunning Vincent and Arthur’s thugs.

“Drop them,” Carlo commanded, his voice slicing through the cold air.

Arthur’s men hesitated, looking at Vincent.

“Drop the weapons!” Carlo roared, the Italian accent thick with authority. “Or you will all bleed out on this lawn.”

Slowly, one by one, Arthur’s men dropped their guns to the porch floor.

Vincent Moretti stood frozen, his hand still suspended in the air where he had reached for Vanessa.

“Carlo,” Vincent said, attempting to force a calm smile. “This is an internal family matter. Do not interfere.”

“You are a rat, Vincent,” Carlo spat in disgust. “In Rome, we do not do business with men who steal children. And we certainly do not respect men who betray their own blood.”

Carlo walked up the steps, his expensive shoes crunching on the fallen weapons. He stopped in front of Arthur Bellini.

“You lied to me, Arthur. You brought me to this city under false pretenses. You insulted my honor.”

Arthur opened his mouth to speak, but Carlo drove his fist into Arthur’s stomach. The older man collapsed, wheezing, dropping his cane.

Luca didn’t waste the opportunity.

He grabbed his uncle by the lapels of his expensive gray suit and slammed him against the wooden siding of the guest house.

“Ten years,” Luca snarled, his face inches from Vincent’s. “I mourned my son for four years, while you sat in prison counting the days until you could steal my life.”

Vincent gasped for air, his cold demeanor finally shattering into genuine fear.

“Luca, please! I am your uncle!”

“You are nothing to me,” Luca said quietly.

Luca threw Vincent to the ground next to Arthur.

“Carlo,” Luca said, turning to the Italian businessman. “Thank you.”

Carlo nodded respectfully. “The police are arriving at the main gate, Mr. Moretti. True police. Not Arthur’s men. I ensured the commissioner heard the audio files Mrs. Bellini sent me.”

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder as they sped up the long driveway of the estate.

Vanessa stood near the railing, trembling, staring at the floor.

She had saved us. But she had also ruined her own life.

Luca walked over to her.

He looked down at the woman he was supposed to marry in three weeks.

“Why did you do it, Vanessa?” Luca asked, his voice drained of anger, leaving only exhaustion.

Vanessa wiped her eyes. “My father would have killed me, Luca. He threatened to ruin my mother, to destroy everything if I didn’t help him. I was a coward.”

She looked up, meeting his eyes for the first time.

“But when I saw the boy… when I saw you looking at him… I knew I couldn’t let my father win. Even if it means I go to prison.”

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the trees as squad cars surrounded the guest house.

Officers swarmed the lawn, shouting orders, arresting Arthur, Vincent, and their men.

Vanessa turned around, offering her wrists to an approaching officer.

As they handcuffed her, she looked back at me.

“I’m sorry for the wine, Emily,” she whispered.

Then she was led away into the flashing lights.
