Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

The red strobe light pulsed against Victor’s face.

Once.

Twice.

Every flash made him look more like a ghost.

His satellite phone screeched on the glass table.

A robotic voice echoed through the speaker:

“Account flagged. Sovereign sanctions applied. All outgoing transfers frozen by

order of the Federal Treasury.”

Evelyn stumbled back until her spine hit the glass balcony door.

"Victor?" she cried, her voice cracking.

"Victor, what does that mean?"

Victor didn't answer.

His hands hung limp at his sides.

The arrogance had vanished from his eyes.

Declan walked toward him.

Slow.

Measured.

He didn't raise his hands.

He didn't shout.

He didn't need to.

"You spent two years setting up shell corporations in Panama," Declan said.

Every word fell like a heavy stone.

"You used four dummy companies to buy offshore servers."

"You thought you were clever, Victor."

"You thought you were invisible."

Declan stopped two feet away.

Victor swallowed hard.

His throat bobbed up and down.

"Declan... listen to me," Victor stammered.

"This was business."

"Just business."

"We can settle this outside."

"My father has port access in Rotterdam—"

"Your father has nothing," Declan interrupted.

The door behind us swung wide open.

Six men in black tactical gear entered the room.

They didn't look like hotel security.

They wore federal vests.

The gold letters on their backs caught the flashing red lights:

FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.

Leading them was an agent with gray hair and cold, calculating eyes.

Special Agent Miller.

Miller held a folder stamped with the seal of the Southern District of New York.

"Victor Vale?" Miller's voice sliced through the sirens.

Victor flinched.

"Yes?"

"You are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and grand larceny."

Two agents moved in instantly.

They didn't give him time to speak.

They grabbed his arms, spun him around, and slammed him against the glass wall.

The cold glass fogged under Victor's frantic breath.

Click.

Click.

The steel handcuffs locked tight around his wrists.

"Wait!" Evelyn screamed, dropping to her knees by the sofa.

"I didn't do anything!"

"I was coerced!"

"He forced me to sign those documents!"

"Iris, tell them!"

"Tell them he threatened me!"

I walked over to her.

My bare feet made no sound on the hardwood floor.

Declan's heavy cashmere coat swung gently around my knees.

I looked down at my sister.

The sister I had protected from the world.

The sister who had tried to put me in an orange jumpsuit for forty million

dollars.

"Coerced?" I asked softly.

My voice barely carried over the sirens, but she heard every word.

"You logged into my private account at three in the afternoon, Evelyn."

"You used the password our mother gave us before she died."

"The date of her final surgery."

Evelyn froze.

Her mouth hung open.

Tears streamed down her cheeks, washing away the foundation, leaving red,

blotchy patches of raw fear.

"Iris... please..." she sobbed, reaching for the hem of my coat.

"I'm your baby sister."

"You promised Mom you'd always protect me."

I pulled the fabric away from her fingers.

Her hand fell uselessly against the floor.

"I protected you from the world, Evelyn."

"I never thought I would have to protect myself from you."

Special Agent Miller stepped up beside her.

He looked down with utter disdain.

"Miss Ward," Miller said, pulling out a second pair of cuffs.

"Stand up."

"No!" she shrieked, kicking wildly as two female agents hauled her to her feet.

"Iris! Don't let them take me!"

"Declan! Tell them!"

"I have a life! I have a future!"

"Your future," Declan said coldly, not even looking at her, "will be decided by

a jury in federal court."

They dragged her toward the door.

Her manicured nails clawed at the doorframe, leaving shallow scratches in the

splintered wood.

"Iris!" she screamed one last time as she was pulled into the corridor.

Then the elevator chimed.

The doors closed.

Her screams faded into nothingness.

Silence settled over Suite 1402.

Only the red strobe light continued to flash against the walls.

Marcus stepped forward, holding a black leather briefcase.

"Sir," Marcus said, addressing Declan.

"The Vale assets have been completely secured."

"The state comptroller has formally released the Lantern Trust from all

investigation."

"Every media outlet in the city has retracted their stories."

"And the Beacon Grand?" Declan asked.

"The board of directors just held an emergency vote," Marcus replied.

"They voted to terminate the general manager immediately."

"And they have offered Mrs. Vance a full public apology and a seat on the

executive board."

Declan looked at me.

"Do you want their seat, Iris?"

I looked around the shattered penthouse.

I looked down at my hands.

They had finally stopped shaking.

"No," I said.

My voice was clear.

Steady.

Stronger than it had been all evening.

"I don't want their seat."

"I want the children's wing built."

"I want the clinics funded."

"And I want every single person who thought they could step on the weak to know

that their money cannot save them."

Declan’s lips curved into a faint, proud smile.

May you like

He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close against his chest.

"Then that is exactly what we will do."
