Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Trap

Daniel left the hospital for the first time since Sarah fell.

He went straight to Vance Global’s Manhattan headquarters with Detective Ortiz, two federal agents, and enough anger to light the building.

The emergency board meeting had already started.

Eleanor appeared by video.

She wore a cream suit, pearl earrings, and the expression of a woman attending a charity luncheon instead of fleeing an attempted-murder warrant.

“Daniel is unstable,” she told the directors. “His wife suffered a tragic accident, and he is using grief to attack me.”

Daniel entered the room.

Every head turned.

Eleanor’s face flickered.

“Hello, Eleanor.”

She recovered quickly. “You should be with your wife.”

“I was. She suggested I come remove a criminal from my company.”

The board chair cleared his throat. “Daniel, there are financial allegations against you.”

“I know.”

He handed each director a packet prepared by forensic accountants overnight.

The offshore transfers attributed to Daniel had been created using his digital signature after the dates they supposedly occurred.

Metadata traced the files to Grant Mercer’s law office.

Then Daniel played the foyer video.

Eleanor’s hands struck Sarah’s shoulders.

Sarah disappeared over the railing.

The room went dead silent.

Eleanor’s image froze—not from bad internet, but from shock.

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

“You thought everyone would stay afraid of you.”

Eleanor’s voice sharpened. “That video is manipulated.”

“Then explain it to a jury.”

The board chair immediately suspended Eleanor’s voting authority pending legal review.

For the first time in years, she had no control of Vance Global.

Then one of the federal agents received a message and stepped forward.

“We have your location.”

Eleanor vanished from the video call.

Ortiz smiled without humor. “Good.”

The IP address traced to a luxury hotel six blocks away.

Police surrounded the building.

Daniel insisted on remaining at headquarters.

Ten minutes later, Ortiz called.

“She wasn’t there.”

“What?”

“The laptop was. Someone set the video conference to relay through the hotel network.”

Eleanor had anticipated the trace.

Again.

Daniel looked toward the conference room windows.

Far below, traffic crawled through Manhattan.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Sarah.

Grace opened both eyes today.

He smiled despite everything.

Then another text arrived from an unknown number.

It was a live photograph of Sarah’s hospital room door.

The image had been taken seconds earlier.

The message beneath it read:

May you like

YOU TOOK MY COMPANY.

I’LL TAKE WHAT YOU LOVE.
