Chapter 9 - The Breach at Dawn

The storm raged through the night, knocking out power lines across the coastal district and plunging the city into darkness.
At 4:30 AM, the estate was running on heavy industrial backup generators.
Harper woke suddenly from a deep sleep, her sharp survival instincts tingling with immediate danger.
The rhythmic hum of the generator had suddenly cut out.
The house was in total, suffocating darkness.
Then came the sound: the muffled crack of silenced automatic gunfire echoing from the front security gate, followed immediately by the shattering of heavy glass in the lower conservatory.
The Morettis hadn't waited for Gabriel to strike.
Enzo Moretti had launched a desperate, suicidal assault directly against the estate.
Harper immediately rolled out of bed, grabbing the heavy silk robe from the chair.
Before she could reach the door, it burst open.
Gabriel stood in the frame, illuminated by the red emergency backup lights. He wore black tactical trousers and a shoulder holster housing a heavy semi-automatic pistol. His left ribs were tightly strapped, but his movements were lethal, precise, and entirely unhindered.
“They breached the lower perimeter,” Gabriel said, his voice flat, icy, and totally composed. “Dante is holding the grand staircase. I am moving you to the reinforced bunker in the sub-basement.”
“Gabriel, look out!” Harper screamed.
A masked gunman armed with a submachine gun appeared at the end of the gallery hallway behind Gabriel.
Gabriel reacted with blinding, terrifying speed.
He spun on his heel, drawing his weapon in a single fluid motion.
Pht-pht.
Two suppressed shots echoed down the corridor. The gunman collapsed instantly, his weapon clattering across the hardwood floor.
Gabriel grabbed Harper’s hand, pulling her behind his broad frame as they moved rapidly down the service corridor toward the private elevator.
Suddenly, two more attackers rounded the corner near the service stairs.
Gunfire erupted, wood splinters and plaster showering down around them as bullets ripped through the walls.
Gabriel shoved Harper into a recessed doorway, returning fire with deadly accuracy. Both attackers fell, but a stray ricochet struck the elevator control panel, showering the hall in sparks and frying the electronic locks to the sub-basement bunker.
“The bunker is compromised,” Gabriel said, assessing the sparking panel without a hint of panic. “We move to the roof helipad.”
They fought their way up the eastern stairwell.
Dante and three loyal Costa guards joined them on the upper landing, their weapons hot, smoke filling the corridors.
“We’ve neutralized twelve hostiles on the ground floor, Boss!” Dante shouted over the noise. “Enzo Moretti is leading the second wave himself—he’s coming up the west wing!”
They reached the heavy steel doors leading out onto the rain-swept roof.
As Dante kicked the doors open, a shadow leaped from behind the air filtration units.
It was Trent Miller.
Harper gasped, her blood running cold.
Trent was wearing a stolen security vest, his face twisted in a manic, drug-fueled rage. His right leg was braced in heavy medical steel, but in his hands, he held a sawed-off shotgun aimed directly at Harper’s chest.
“Did you miss me, Harper?” Trent screamed over the howling wind. “Did you think this mobster could protect you from me?”
Beside Trent stood Enzo Moretti, holding an assault rifle aimed at Gabriel.
“Drop your weapon, Costa!” Enzo snarled, rain streaming down his face. “Drop it or the girl gets blown in half!”
Gabriel did not drop his weapon.
He stepped directly in front of Harper, using his own body as an impenetrable human shield.
“You should have stayed on the boat, Trent,” Gabriel said, his voice cutting through the gale-force wind with absolute calm.
“Shut up! Shut up!” Trent shrieked, his finger trembling violently on the trigger. “She was mine! She was nothing before me!”
Behind Gabriel’s back, Harper’s fear suddenly vanished.
Looking at Trent—pathetic, broken, screeching in the storm like a wounded animal—the last chains of her three-year nightmare shattered into dust.
She wasn't a victim anymore.
She was Harper Bennett.
And she was standing beside the man she loved.
Harper noticed a heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted to the wall directly beside the roof door frame.
While Trent was screaming at Gabriel, Harper slipped her hand around the metal handle, ripped the pin free, and hoisted the heavy canister.
With a fierce, primal scream of pure defiance, Harper swung the heavy fire extinguisher around Gabriel’s flank, hurling it with all her strength directly into Trent’s shattered right knee.
The solid metal struck Trent’s braced leg with a sickening crunch.
Trent shrieked in blinding agony, his aim flying skyward as the shotgun discharged uselessly into the storm clouds.
In that split second of distraction, Gabriel moved.
Gabriel fired two shots into Enzo Moretti’s chest, dropping the rival heir instantly.
Dante lunged forward, disarming the remaining gunmen in a flurry of gunfire.
Trent collapsed onto the wet roof tiles, sobbing hysterically, clutching his destroyed leg as the rain washed over him.
Gabriel stepped over Enzo’s body, standing tall above Trent.
He raised his weapon, his dark eyes void of all mercy.
“Wait, Gabriel,” Harper’s voice cut through the rain.
Gabriel paused, glancing back at her.
Harper walked forward through the storm, her midnight silk robe billowing around her, her chin held high, her eyes blazing with absolute clarity.
She stood looking down at the man who had tormented her for three years.
Trent looked up at her through his tears, terrified, pathetic. “Harper... please... tell him to stop... you loved me...”
Harper looked at him with pure, unadulterated coldness.
“I never loved you, Trent,” Harper said, her voice steady as iron. “I was just surviving you. And today... your time is up.”
Harper turned her back on him and walked toward Gabriel.
Gabriel looked at Dante.
“Take him to the harbor,” Gabriel commanded softly. “Drop him where the water runs deepest.”
May you like
“Yes, Boss,” Dante answered.
Gabriel wrapped his arm around Harper, pulling her soaked, trembling body against his chest as the first rays of dawn broke through the storm clouds on the eastern horizon, bathing them in brilliant, triumphant golden light.
