Chapter 15 - A SYMPHONY OF THREE

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was filled with light, music, and laughter.

Not the tense, terrifying atmosphere of Luca’s wedding.

This was a celebration of life.

The occasion was Leo’s ninth birthday.

Dozens of children from the local neighborhood school played on the manicured lawns outside, supervised by smiling staff.

Mia Bennett, radiant and healthy, with full color in her cheeks and a fashionable crop of dark curls, was laughing near the dessert table with Marco.

Inside the ballroom, the white grand piano stood open to the summer air.

A small crowd of family and friends gathered around the instrument.

Dante stood by the curve of the piano, holding a champagne glass.

Beside him, Clara’s arm was linked through his.

Her wedding band of platinum and pavé diamonds clicked softly against the blue sapphire on her finger.

At the keyboard sat Leo.

He wore comfortable trousers and a crisp white linen shirt.

He looked up at the gathering without a trace of fear.

When someone dropped a fork against a plate near the buffet, Leo merely blinked, adjusted his posture, and turned back to the keys.

He looked at Clara.

Clara gave him a tiny, encouraging nod.

“Two steps and a pause, Leo,” she whispered across the wood.

Leo smiled.

He raised his hands with confident, practiced poise.

His fingers descended onto the ivory keys.

He did not play a dark minor cadence of betrayal.

He did not play a lullaby of mourning.

He played a bright, complex, soaring piece of his own creation.

A waltz that blended classical precision with the rhythmic vitality of ocean waves.

His hands moved across the keyboard like dancing birds, hitting high sparkling trills and rich, resonant bass chords with effortless joy.

The guests stood in stunned, breathless silence.

Old Don Bernardo wiped a tear from his wrinkled cheek with a silk handkerchief.

When the final triumphant chord resonated through the vast ballroom, Leo lifted his hands, letting the notes linger in the warm salt air.

Silence held the room for two heartbeats.

Then, thunderous applause erupted from every corner of the estate.

Cheers, whistles, and shouts of pure celebration echoed up into the chandeliers.

Leo did not cover his ears.

He stood up from the bench, bowed with clumsy, charming dignity, and then looked directly at Dante and Clara.

“I saw everyone,” Leo announced proudly, his voice ringing clear over the applause.

Clara laughed through happy tears, stepping forward to wrap him in a warm, fierce embrace.

Dante stepped in beside them, his large arms encircling both his wife and his son.

The three of them stood together at the white piano, bathed in the golden afternoon sun of a new dawn.

The bullets were gone.

The shadows were buried.

And the music would never stop again.

THE END
