Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

“Get down!” Alessandro roared.

He shoved Sophie and her father behind the heavy stone altar in the center of the crypt just as Vincenzo’s men opened fire. The deafening roar of automatic weapons chewed through the ancient stone, raining dust and debris over them.

“We’re trapped!” Sophie cried, shielding her father’s frail body with her own.

Alessandro checked his magazine. He had eight bullets left. Ten men in the hallway.

“I’m going to draw their fire,” Alessandro said, his eyes locking with Sophie’s. “When I move, you take your father and run down the aqueduct tunnel behind the altar. It leads to the river.”

“No!” Sophie grabbed his arm. “They’ll kill you!”

Alessandro smiled—a genuine, fearless smile. He pressed his hand over the diamond bracelet on her wrist. “Tell my father I kept his promise.”

Before Sophie could stop him, Alessandro vaulted over the stone altar, firing his weapon with deadly precision. Three of Russo’s men dropped instantly.

“Kill him!” Vincenzo screamed, firing wildly.

A bullet caught Alessandro in the shoulder, spinning him around, but he stayed on his feet, firing twice more, taking down two more guards.

Sophie couldn't leave him. She raised the small silver pistol, stepped out from cover, and fired at the cluster of men. Her shot missed, but it forced Vincenzo to duck, breaking their line of fire.

Suddenly, the sound of heavy boots echoing down the stone stairs drowned out the gunfire.

“FBI! Drop your weapons!” a booming voice ordered.

Dozens of tactical laser sights cut through the dusty air, locking onto Vincenzo and his remaining men. Heavily armored federal agents flooded the crypt, slamming the gangsters into the stone walls and kicking their weapons away.

Vincenzo Russo dropped his gun, raising his hands in fury. “You have nothing on me! I own the judges!”

“Not anymore,” a man in a sharp suit said, stepping through the agents. It was Agent Miller, the head of the organized crime task force.

Alessandro leaned against the altar, clutching his bleeding shoulder, and tossed the heavy leather ledger to the agent.

“Read chapter four, Miller,” Alessandro breathed heavily. “Money laundering, bribery, extortion, and the murder of a federal prosecutor. It’s all there. Signed in his own handwriting.”

Agent Miller caught the book. He looked at Vincenzo with a cold smile. “Cuff him. He’s never seeing sunlight again.”

As they dragged the screaming mob boss away, Sophie dropped her gun and ran to Alessandro. She pressed her hands against his bleeding shoulder. “You idiot! You could have died!”

“I’m fine,” Alessandro groaned, though his face was pale. He looked past her to her father. “Are you okay, sir?”

Her father nodded, tears streaming down his weathered face. “Thank you, son. You gave me my life back.”

Three days later, the storm had finally broken.

The sun shone brightly over Central Park. Sophie sat on a park bench, watching Leo run across the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Alessandro had bought him.

Leo was laughing—a real, carefree laugh Sophie hadn’t heard in two years.

Her father sat beside her on the bench, looking healthy and clean in a tailored suit. His diplomatic status had been fully restored, his name completely cleared by the federal government. The state department had even issued a public apology.

Alessandro walked up the path, his arm in a black sling, holding two coffees. He handed one to Sophie and sat on her other side.

“The Russos are entirely dismantled,” Alessandro said softly, watching Leo play. “Camilla was arrested at the airport trying to flee to Switzerland. The syndicate is dead.”

“And you?” Sophie asked, looking at him.

“I handed all my assets over to the feds,” Alessandro smiled. “I’m a civilian now. No more mob. No more hiding.”

Sophie looked down at her hands. The exhaustion and terror of the past two years were finally gone. She had her father back. Leo was safe. She had her dignity, her name, and her freedom.

“Thank you,” Sophie whispered, leaning her head against Alessandro’s good shoulder.

May you like

Alessandro wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close. “We’re family, Sophie. We always have been.”

For the first time in as long as she could remember, Sophie felt completely, unconditionally safe.
