Chapter 15 - The Life I Chose for Myself — The End

One year later, I stood beneath the diner's new sign.
The paint was still drying.
June held a ribbon.
Finn carried a tray of warm rolls.
Neighbors gathered along the sidewalk.
We had expanded the kitchen.
Hired three new employees.
And started a small training program.
For workers rebuilding their lives.
I looked around at their faces.
Some were nervous.
Some were laughing.
All of them belonged.
Finn stepped beside me.
"You ready?"
I took the scissors.
"I think so."
The ribbon fell.
Everyone applauded.
Inside, the tables filled quickly.
A young woman approached the counter.
She held a crumpled application.
"I don't have much experience," she said.
I recognized the fear in her eyes.
I remembered my first day at the estate.
The silence.
The bleach.
The rules.
"Can you learn?" I asked.
She nodded.
"Then we'll teach you."
Her shoulders relaxed.
Later, Finn joined me outside.
We watched sunlight reach the windows.
He offered me his hand.
I took it because I wanted to.
No debt tied us together.
No fear kept us apart.
We had become friends first.
Then something gentler had grown.
I leaned against his shoulder.
"You still have grease on your face," I said.
He laughed.
"Some things never change."
I kissed his cheek.
"Some things should."
At closing, I counted the register.
Locked the door.
And turned off the lights.
I wasn't invisible anymore.
I wasn't anyone's collateral.
I was Norah Hale.
May you like
And my life finally belonged to me.
The End.
