Chapter 15 - THE PROMISE OF FOREVER

The evening reception beneath the stars was a symphony of light, laughter, and soft music.
Hundreds of fairy lights hung from the branches of the ancient oak trees along the coastline.
The ocean was calm, reflecting the silver light of a full autumn moon.
Clara and Damian stood in the center of the wooden dance floor built right over the sand of the cove.
A classical quartet played a slow, romantic melody.
Damian’s hand rested firmly on the small of Clara’s back, guiding her in smooth, effortless circles.
Her ivory gown swayed with every step, brushing against his trousers.
She rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, calm rhythm of his heart.
A year ago, that heart had beat frantic and wild in the middle of a burning house.
Tonight, it beat with absolute peace.
“Are you tired, my love?” Damian asked softly into her hair.
“A little,” Clara admitted, looking up with glowing eyes.
“My feet aren't used to silk slippers. I’m still a girl who likes to walk barefoot on the sand.”
Damian smiled—a warm, breathtaking expression that transformed his rugged features.
He stopped dancing.
Right there in the middle of the crowded dance floor, in front of governors, mayors, and family bosses, the Don of Boston knelt down.
He unbuckled the delicate satin straps of her shoes.
He slipped them off her feet, setting them neatly beside the floorboards.
Then he stood back up, kicked off his own polished leather dress shoes, and stepped onto the cool, damp sand of the beach.
He held out his hand to her.
“Dance with me where you saved my life, Clara,” Damian whispered.
Tears prickled Clara’s eyes.
She stepped off the wooden platform, her bare feet sinking into the familiar, cool sand.
She took his hand.
They danced on the edge of the water, the small waves lapping gently against their ankles.
A few yards away, sitting on a plush velvet picnic blanket under the watchful eye of a smiling nurse, Oliver and Owen clapped their little hands in delight.
Oliver waved a tiny white flower at them.
“Mama! Dada!” Owen cheered in his sweet, baby voice.
Clara’s heart overflowed with a joy so vast it felt like the ocean itself.
Damian pulled her close, lifting her slightly off the ground as his mouth found hers once more.
The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with promises that did not need contracts, syndicates, or guns to protect.
When he finally set her down, he reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a small, worn silver object.
Clara gasped.
It was the silver name tag from her old maid’s uniform.
CLARA HAYES — SERVICE STAFF.
It was scratched, dented, and bore the scorch marks of the fire from the night the estate burned.
“You kept that?” she whispered, looking at him in wonder.
“I carry it every single day,” Damian said softly.
He turned the metal over in his palm.
On the back, freshly engraved in elegant script, were three new lines:
SAVIOR OF MY SONS.
QUEEN OF MY HEART.
MISTRESS OF MY LIFE.
He pressed the cool silver into her palm, closing her fingers over it, then wrapping his own strong hand over hers.
“No matter how many years pass,” Damian whispered, looking directly into her soul,
“I will never forget who you are to me.”
“And who am I, Damian?” she asked, her voice trembling with sweet emotion.
Damian smiled, pulling her tight against his chest as the Atlantic waves washed over their bare feet beneath the stars.
“You are my home, Clara,” Damian replied.
May you like
“And you are never, ever leaving.”
