PART 2: THE METTLE OF A PROSECUTOR

Marcus’s desperate screams faded to nothing behind the thick, soundproof doors of the emergency ward as the SWAT team hauled him away like a sack of dead weight. The hospital hallway fell back into its typical rhythm—the hurried footsteps of doctors and the fearful whispers of onlookers who had witnessed the takedown.

Helen—the mother Marcus had consistently dismissed as an "unremarkable, harmless widow"—slowly stood up. She smoothed out the sharp lines of her formal dress uniform, gently adjusting the silver star emblems pinned to her shoulders. The softness of a mother vanished entirely, replaced by the imposing, icy presence of a woman who had spent half her life at the scales of justice, breaking corrupt politicians and international cartels.

"Helen... what on earth is going on?" Dr. Arthur, the hospital's director and a long-time family friend, stepped into the room holding a clipboard, his hands trembling slightly as he looked at her full-dress uniform. "Tactical SWAT? A federal warrant? He’s just a domestic abuser, isn't he?"

"No, Arthur," Helen said coldly, her eyes scanning the dark bruises mapping her daughter’s fragile skin. "The domestic battery was simply the perfect legal catalyst to move a tactical unit into this hospital without waiting for a lengthy county court approval. I reopened a sealed federal file from three years ago right before I left office. Marcus’s logistics firm is a primary shell network laundering money for South American cartels through his mother Sylvia's shell charities."

Chloe blinked through a haze of heavy pain medication, staring at her mother in sheer shock. "Mom... you knew? You knew all along?"

"I warned you from the very first day you brought him into my home, Chloe," Helen knelt back down beside the bed, taking her daughter's cold hand, her tone softening but remaining absolute. "Men with eyes that hungry for status never look down to see who they are stepping on. He thought he married an ordinary, quiet engineer, and that he had a mother-in-law who spent her retirement baking pumpkin pies. He had no idea that every single wire transfer he funneled into his mistress’s account over the past year was actively flagged under a special federal audit code."

Right then, Helen's personal phone vibrated. It was the tactical commander who had just initiated the raid on the Vance estate.

"Chief Prosecutor," the voice on the other end reported with absolute, military reverence. "Target Sylvia Vance has been secured in the dining room. We intercepted Marcus's mistress actively sitting in Miss Chloe's designated seat, about to carve the Thanksgiving turkey. The primary servers and corporate ledger files hidden in the wine cellar have been successfully confiscated."

"Any resistance?" Helen asked, her voice as level as if she were checking the time.

"The broker tried to destroy a secondary encrypted drive, but he was neutralized on site. We are transporting all targets to the federal building now."

Helen ended the call. She turned back to Dr. Arthur. "Keep Chloe in the restricted ICU ward. Ensure no press, no local city officials, and absolutely no state court representatives get anywhere near this room. This is a Department of Justice operation now."
